The Kadett, which belongs to the compact class, and its successor Astra ( Latin for stars) are the most popular models from Opel .

The first Opel Kadett was built from late 1936 to mid-1940. After a long break, the model designation was reintroduced into the program with the appearance of the Kadett A in early summer 1962. The name Astra was taken over in the summer of 1991 with the model change from the Kadett E to the Astra F by the British GM subsidiary Vauxhall . Vauxhall introduced the name Astra for the right-hand drive Kadett D produced there. With the Astra J , the tenth series came onto the market in autumn 2009.

In September 2015, the Astra K was presented at the IAA , which reached dealers a month later.

Production sites

The first production site for an Opel Kadett was the main factory in Rüsselsheim from 1936 . By the end of civilian car production at Opel, over 107,000 vehicles were manufactured there by 1940. The production facilities of this pre-war model were awarded to the USSR by decision of the victorious powers together with the Brandenburg Opel factory , dismantled in 1946 and rebuilt in the Soviet Union. From 1948 the pre-war Kadett was manufactured in Moscow as the " Moskvich-400 " for the internal market of the USSR until 1959.

For the newly developed Kadett A , the Opel plant in Bochum was built from 1960 , in which, from June 1962, only this car was initially produced. The post-war models of the Kadett are chronologically marked with letters from A to E, whereby the production of the Astra as a successor in Bochum began in summer 1991 with the Astra F model .

With the introduction of the Astra J in autumn 2009, the station wagon variant Caravan was also renamed "Sports Tourer" in the other classes of the manufacturer. The Astra J models are built in Gliwice , Rüsselsheim am Main and Ellesmere Port . In May 2012, GM announced that it would relocate production to England, as 94 percent of workers there agreed to cut wages. The predecessor station wagon variant Caravan and the five-door Astra H were produced in Bochum together with the van offshoot Opel Zafira B and its successor model Zafira Tourer C.

Registration numbers

In the German registration statistics, both the Kadett and the Astra were for a long time the "eternal second" behind the VW Beetle and later the VW Golf , with second place only being cemented from 1983 on and held until 2000.

Since the beginning of the new millennium, the Astra has been losing ground in Germany. It lost its second place in 2001 and even dropped to 8th place in the registration statistics by 2003. The main reasons for this are likely to be the quality problems at Opel in the 1990s, which caused many customers to turn their backs on Opel ( see also: Lopez effect ). Growing competition may also have played a role.

With the introduction of the Astra H in spring 2004, it was possible to recapture second place in Germany - but only temporarily. In the meantime, the Astra is fighting with a number of competing models for the top places in the German registration statistics, with the first place being out of sight.

As on the German market, the Opel Astra H was unable to displace the VW Golf from the top of the registration numbers in the European automobile market in 2006 and was only 7th in Europe in 2006. In 2008, the ten millionth Opel Astra rolled off the assembly line.

Identical vehicles all over the world

In Great Britain , the series has been marketed as the Vauxhall Astra since 1980 . General Motors offered a revised Astra G in Argentina , Brazil and Uruguay , and the Astra H as the Chevrolet Astra in Chile and Mexico . In Argentina and Brazil, the five-door Astra H was sold as the Chevrolet Vectra GT . In Australia and New Zealand the Astra H was marketed as the Holden Astra . Between autumn 2007 and summer 2009 the Saturn Astra was sold in the USA and Canada , a slightly redesigned Astra H. The Kadett E was manufactured under license by GM Daewoo as a Daewoo Racer mainly for the Eastern European market and as a Pontiac LeMans for the North American market . After his construction time at Opel, it was optically changed as Daewoo Nexia and continued to be built for the Western European market.
