The Astra H ( lat. Astra "star") is a type of vehicle in the compact class of Opel . It is the successor to the Astra G and was manufactured from March 2004 to September 2010 for the German market. The Astra H is still offered in some markets today.

On his Delta - platform also models built General Motors brands Vauxhall , Holden and Saturn on. A hatchback and GTC variant of the Astra H, which was slightly modified for the American market, was also sold in North America as the Saturn Astra from 2007 to 2009 . In Chile and Mexico , General Motors sells the Astra H as the Chevrolet Astra , in other countries in South America such as Argentina and Brazil as the Chevrolet Vectra (notchback) and Chevrolet Vectra GT (hatchback). In Australia and New Zealand, the Astra is sold under the “Holden” brand.

In December 2009, the ninth generation of the middle 1962 introduced model Opel Kadett / Astra as Astra J introduced.

Up to the attitude of car production at the Bochum plant of Opel Astra H was still running until December 2014 for the Eastern European market by the band and was there in parallel with the Astra J as Opel Astra Classic III offered. Production for the Russian market takes place in Saint Petersburg . There the model is marketed alongside the current Astra generation under the name Opel Astra Family .

Model variants

  • five-door hatchback (March 2004 to September 2009)
  • five-door station wagon (caravan; August 2004 to September 2010)
  • three-door hatchback (GTC; March 2005 to September 2010)
  • two-door convertible (TwinTop) with retractable steel roof (May 2006 to September 2010)
  • four-door notchback (Sedan; October 2006 to March 2010 - preferably built for the Eastern European market)
  • Delivery truck with three doors

In contrast to the previous models, the four-door sedan with notchback was initially only offered in Eastern Europe, Turkey and South America (there under the name Chevrolet Vectra ) from autumn 2006 . In the other markets, the four-door car no longer plays a role in this class.

Facelift

In February 2007, the Astra H was modified, which could be seen, among other things, from the changed rear lights made of clear instead of solid-colored plastic and other bumpers at the front and rear. In the three-door GTC and the TwinTop, the facelift was limited to a radiator grille and a central bumper grille with a rectangular grille instead of the previous horizontal struts.

From October 2008 the notchback sedan of the Astra H could now also be ordered in Germany. It was only available with a 1.6-liter Twinport engine.

Equipment variants (for Germany)

The following equipment variants were offered in Germany:

  • Astra (basic model, Essentia as a new EU vehicle, from 2008 referred to as Selection "110 years" ).
  • Black & White (2010)
  • Edition , meanwhile Catch me now .
  • Edition "111 Years"
  • Enjoy is the equipment version for new EU vehicles and corresponds to the Edition version with the exception of ESPplus .
  • Navi , formerly Catch me , before that Edition Plus . Special model in Germany / Austria, like edition but with navigation system .
  • Innovation , from 2008 called INNOVATION "110 Years" .
  • Endless Summer , only as a convertible (from 2007).
  • Sports
  • Elegance (10 / 2004-06 / 2005)
  • Cosmo
  • OPC
  • OPC Nürburgring Edition
  • OPC Race Camp

The equipment variants in other countries differ from the German offer. In Italy, for example, no Sport version is offered; in other countries such as Great Britain, the models are offered with completely different names with partly the same equipment (“Club”, “Life”, “SRi”). Only one or two models are sold in export markets such as China or Chile. All variants come as standard with power steering , central locking with remote control, electric front windows and electric exterior mirrors , six airbags , anti-lock braking system , immobilizer and electronic stability program (ESPplus), traction control (TCplus), cornering brake control (CBC, brake pressure control in curves), and one Brake assist . A park pilot is also supplied with the Astra GTC (from Edition ).

Standard optional or available in higher trim levels are extras such as a cruise control , a climate control (ECC), a DVD - navigation system , a Bluetooth - hands-free (this support, however, only the hands-free profile and not the more modern remote SIM Access Profile ), a Tire pressure control system (TPMS) or a parking aid (PDC).

Other options include a chassis with electronic damper control (IDS +) and AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) cornering lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlights.

OPC

Opel Astra OPC (2005-2010)

The sporty top model OPC , which was sold from autumn 2005, has enlarged bumpers and side skirts, a centrally positioned exhaust, standard 18 "wheels (optional 19" wheels) and Recaro sports seats. The 2.0-l turbo engine with 177 kW (240 hp) enables acceleration to 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds, and the top speed is 244 km / h.

At the end of October 2005, the OPC undercut the class course record on the Nürburgring by four seconds in 8: 35.93 minutes. Racing driver Manuel Reuter was at the wheel . This record drive under the motto technology transfer from the racetrack to the road was elaborately staged (various cameras on the car and on the track, helicopter shots ) and finally distributed on a DVD with the title Pure Passion as a marketing tool, including inboard shots with displayed measurement data, aerial shots and contains the complete lap from the cockpit perspective.

In 2008 there was a special model called the OPC Nürburgring Edition with a rally pattern on the bonnet, roof and rear. The most important equipment details of this version were the 19 "alloy wheels in bi-color design and the electronic chassis control IDS-Plus2 (newer generation). The Nürburgring Edition was limited to 835 pieces, this was a homage to Manuel Reuter's 2005 in one Astra H OPC clocked a lap time of 8: 35.93 minutes on the Nürburgring Nordschleife .

In 2009 the Astra OPC Race Camp was offered. This was only available in white: the roof, the radiator grille, the exterior mirrors and the wheels are painted black. It also has the purely mechanical chassis from its British sister model VXR . It also has fewer features than the normal OPC.

In September 2010 the production of the Astra OPC was stopped.

Diesel engines

Initially, a soot particle filter was only available for the diesel models at an additional cost. From the revision at the end of 2006 this was part of the standard scope. However, depending on the driving style, it has to regenerate approximately every 1000–2000 km, which then results in an additional consumption of 5 to 10 liters of diesel / 100 km over a few kilometers and can lead to a slight roar in the exhaust system . Like the other German car manufacturers, Opel relies on the combustion of the collected soot particles by post-injection and thus the conversion into CO 2 .

The 1.3 and 1.9 CDTI engines were jointly developed by GM Powertrain and Fiat . After the end of the joint venture, General Motors and Fiat share the intellectual rights to this engine; some of the diesel engines are manufactured in the General Motors factories and some at Fiat. The 1.7 CDTI engines are from Isuzu . The 1.3 CDTI ECOTEC won the Engine Of The Year Award in 2005 in the 1.0 to 1.4 liter displacement class.

The Astra H worldwide

In Australia and New Zealand it was sold under the name Holden Astra H as a five-door hatchback, as a coupé (GTC), wagon (caravan) and as a twin top; You can choose from the Ecotec petrol engines with 1.8 l, 2.0 l with turbocharging and 2.2 l with direct injection, as well as the 1.9-liter diesel engine (88 kW / 120 PS).

In South America, the five-door Astra hatchback from Brazilian production is offered as the Chevrolet Vectra GT with a two-liter engine (89–94 kW / 121–126 hp), as well as a four-door notchback version (Chevrolet Vectra) with a two-liter or a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (107 kW / 146 PS, with alcohol operation 110 kW / 150 PS). The car, which is called Chevrolet Astra and comes from Antwerp, is also available as a five-door with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and 103 kW (140 PS) and a 1.9-liter turbo diesel (88 kW / 120 PS) as a Chevrolet Astra OPC with 175 kW (240 PS) two-liter turbo engine in the program. Externally, this OPC differed from the European variant only by the Chevrolet logo, with the Opel logo still being found on the ignition strip cover. Initially, the complete OPC body kit was used, but later the OPC-specific front apron was replaced by a conventional bumper of the revised five-door model with the OPC line approach, while the OPC rear apron was still installed.

The Saturn Astra has been sold in the USA and Canada since autumn 2007. These are Astra three- and five-door models with 1.8-liter four-cylinder (103 kW / 140 PS) built at the Opel plant in Antwerp. However, when General Motors gave up the Saturn brand , the Astra disappeared from the market in North America. In Mexico the car is only offered as a five-door model under the name Chevrolet Astra; In addition to the 1.8-liter, the two-liter turbo with 150 kW / 204 PS is also available here.

In China, the notchback version of the Astra was offered under the name Opel Astra A + until recently.
