The Opel 8/20 PS was an upper middle class passenger car that Adam Opel KG built from 1910 to 1913 as the successor to the 12/14 PS and 8/16 PS models .

History and technology

At the end of 1910, production of the 8/16 hp model was discontinued. Two years earlier, the Opel 12/14 PS with 2.1-liter engine had been replaced by the Opel 10/18 PS with 2.5-liter engine. As a result, the model range now lacked a 2.0-liter model as the basis for the upper middle class. On the other hand, the missing 8/16 hp had to be replaced with a 1.85 liter engine. Thus, its successor was a 2.0-liter model.

Its engine was a four - cylinder block engine with a displacement of 2032 cm³ (bore × stroke = 75 mm × 115 mm), which produced 20 hp (14.7 kW) at 1600 rpm. performed. The side-controlled engine was water-cooled. The crankcase was cast from aluminum, the cylinder block and head were made of gray cast iron. The engine power was passed on to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft . The maximum speed of the car was 65 km / h.

The frame consisted of sheet steel U-profiles. The two rigid axles were suspended from semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs. The service brake was designed as an internal shoe brake that acted on the transmission output shaft. The handbrake worked on the drums on the rear wheels.

There were five body styles, a two-seater Phaeton , a four- or six-seater double phaeton , a four-door sedan and a landaulet .

The cheapest variant (Phaeton) cost 6900 RM.

The 8/20 PS was replaced by the slightly more powerful 8/22 PS in early 1914 .
