The Opel 6/16 PS was a middle class passenger car that Adam Opel KG built from 1911 to 1920 as the successor to the 6/14 PS model .

History and technology

The 6/16 hp continued the tradition of its two mid-range predecessors of offering customers the appearance of larger cars.

The engine was a four-cylinder in - line engine with a capacity of 1539 cm³, which developed 18 hp (13.3 kW) at 1750 rpm. This side-controlled engine was a lighter version of the 1.5 liter engine from the previous model. The engine power was passed on to the rear axle via a manually shifted four-speed gearbox. Four gears were unusual for a mid-range car at the time. The car reached a top speed of 60 km / h.

The two rigid axles were suspended from three-quarter elliptical leaf springs.

The first series of the 6/16 hp was available as a two-seater Phaeton , a four-seater touring car , a four-door Pullman limousine or a landaulet . It was discontinued at the end of 1915.

The second series was presented in 1916. It had a slightly larger engine with a displacement of 1570 cm³, which, however, only made 15 HP (11 kW). In addition to the four body variants of the first series, the cars of the second series were also available as a convertible . Otherwise the second series was similar to the first.

Production of the second series ended in 1920 without a direct successor in the middle class. Only the 7/34 hp model , which was offered from 1927, continued the Opel tradition in this size class.
