The Opel 14/30 PS was an automobile of the upper class , which the Adam Opel KG 1913-1914 as successor to the model 13/30 PS built.

History and technology

Like its predecessor, the 14/30 PS was a decidedly luxury car. After only two years of construction, engines that delivered ever greater outputs with the same cubic capacity were installed. This is how the Opel 14/34 PS , the Opel 14/38 PS and finally the Opel 14/48 PS came into being . The fourth stage of evolution was only discontinued 11 years after the 14/30 PS was presented.

The 14/30 hp had a side-controlled four - cylinder in - line engine with 3450 cm³ displacement, the 30 hp (22 kW) at 1550 rpm. performed. While the base engine was made of an aluminum alloy , the cylinder covers were made of cast iron . The engine was water-cooled. The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft with two joints. This enabled the car to reach a top speed of 70 km / h.

The two rigid axles were suspended from three-quarter elliptical longitudinal leaf springs on the steel U-profile frame. There were only band brakes on the rear wheels.

The car was available as a two-seat Phaeton , a four-seat touring car , a four-door Pullman limousine , a landaulet or a two-door coupé . As a Phaeton, the car cost 9,750 RM. The other superstructures were more expensive.

From 1915 the power increased to 34 PS (25 kW) and the car was now called 14/34 PS accordingly. The top speed stayed the same.

Two years later, in 1917, a newly developed engine of the same size developed 38 hp (28 kW). The 14/38 HP did not get any faster.

The last stage of evolution was reached in 1919. The output of the new car was noticeable at 48 hp (35 kW) at 1600 rpm. gone up. For the first time, a higher top speed of 75 km / h was associated with it. However, it was still sold as "14/38 PS". It was not until the beginning of 1924 that it was given the name “14/48 PS”, which it was entitled to.

At the end of 1924, production of the 14/48 hp ran out without a direct successor. It was not until 1927 that two models appeared that could be considered successors: the smaller 12/50 hp with a 3.1-liter engine and the larger 15/60 hp with a 3.9-liter engine.
