The Opel 6 , also called Opel 2 liter , was an Opel passenger car with a water-cooled six - cylinder in - line engine . From 1934 to June 1937, 52,594 vehicles of the best-selling German mid-range car of the 1930s were delivered in Rüsselsheim . The successor, the Super 6 , presented in February 1937 received a newly designed OHV six-cylinder engine.
In January 1934, the Opel 6 was presented as the successor to the Opel 1.8 liter at the same time as its smaller sister model Opel 1.3 liter . The vehicles developed in the USA together with the Opel parent company General Motors had a streamlined body with an externally accessible trunk on the new torsion-resistant box frame with crossbar.
The side valve engine, otherwise identical to its predecessor , had a 2.5 mm larger bore (67.5 mm) in the Opel 6 with the same stroke of 90 mm and a displacement of 1932 cm³ . The output was 36 hp / 26.5 kW at 3300 rpm (1.8 liters: 32 hp / 23.5 kW at 3200 rpm). The maximum torque of 105 Nm was reached at 1200 rpm.
The drum brakes on all four wheels, previously operated by a cable, were now hydraulically operated. The front rigid axle also gave way to an independent suspension with Dubonnet spring knees . At the rear, as before, a rigid axle was installed on longitudinal leaf springs, which now had hydraulic shock absorbers . The front suspension, in conjunction with the rigid rear axle, was referred to by Opel as " synchronous suspension " and was comfortably tuned for this time.
The Opel 6 reached a top speed of 100 km / h. His gasoline consumption was 12-13 liters per 100 kilometers.
The car was available as a two- or four-door sedan , as a two-door convertible and as a four-door landaulet .
Opel 6 Pullman (1936)
From August 1934 to October 1936, Opel offered this type especially for the taxi industry as a six-seater Pullman limousine with an extended wheelbase . The long version, designed to compete with the successful Mercedes 200 , was sold 2050 times. With the same wheelbase of 3050 mm, the six-seater 40-hp Mercedes at 6550 Reichsmarks (RM) was around thirty percent more expensive than the Opel 6 Pullman with 36 hp, which was available for 5000 RM. These prices today correspond to approx. 29,300 and 22,400 euros.
The successor to the Opel 6, the four-seat Opel Super 6 , offered from the beginning of 1937 , had a three-speed gearbox with synchronized second and third gear (Opel 6: four-speed without synchronization) and the 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine redesigned by Opel , with largely the same chassis technology -Motor with OHV valve control and 55 HP.
