The Opel Astra G is a type of vehicle of the compact class the Adam Opel AG and was the successor to the Opel Astra F built in Germany from February 1998 to December 2005.
The Holden Astra TS (in Australia) and Vauxhall Astra Mk4 (in Great Britain) models, identical in construction to the Opel Astra G, were also produced from 1998 to 2005 .
In various Arab countries and the Philippines , the Astra G was offered with a hatchback and notchback (in the Philippines only with a notchback) and as a caravan ( station wagon ). The caravan version for the Arab countries had increased ground clearance.
The Opel Astra G was produced in Egypt by General Motors Egypt between 2002 and 2009 for the North African region . It was only available there as a notchback sedan.
In several Central and Eastern European countries , the Astra G was offered as a (cheaper) alternative to the Astra H since October 2003 under the name Opel Astra Classic II . The Classic II was available with a hatchback and notchback as well as a caravan and was produced in Gliwice , Poland until August 2009 .
In Argentina , Brazil and Uruguay , General Motors sold a revised version of the Astra G with hatchback and notchback under the name Chevrolet Astra .
From September 2004 on, a partially modified notchback version was also manufactured for the Russian market as GM-AvtoVAZ Chevrolet Viva by GM-AvtoVAZ in Tolyatti , Russia . In March 2008, however, production had to be stopped due to insufficient sales.
The Opel Astra G manufactured in continental Europe (including the approx. 250,000 Classic II versions built in Poland ) reached 3.95 million units in July 2008. In addition, there are the vehicles built as licensed models in Great Britain and outside Europe, the total number of which is difficult to quantify.
Model variants
- three- and five-door hatchback (CC), vehicle type: T98 (March 1998 to March 2004)
- four-door notchback (sedan), vehicle type: T98 / NB (July 1998 to March 2004)
- five-door station wagon (caravan), vehicle type: T98 / station wagon (March 1998 to July 2004; as CNG to January 2005)
- two-door coupé , vehicle type: T98C (March 2000 to December 2004)
- two-door convertible , vehicle type: T98C (March 2001 to December 2005)
- two-door delivery van, vehicle type: Van
The distribution of the respective model variants of the Astra G differs from region to region worldwide. The notchback variant was never very popular in Germany and Western Europe and is accordingly rare there. In Eastern Europe and in several countries outside Europe, however, it occurs much more frequently.
The delivery van variant was never officially offered in Germany, but some vehicles are in the inventory of authorities. The Astra G Caravan (station wagon) served as the construction basis for the delivery van, but there are no doors or windows from the B-pillar. Models in the Netherlands have a high roof.

Coupe
The Astra Coupé was manufactured by Bertone in Grugliasco Turin, Italy , from March 2000 , which is highlighted by the Bertone logos attached to the side panels and the Bertone logo on the standard door sills.
The vehicle was often seen as the unofficial successor to the Opel Calibra , but according to Opel it was the successor to the Kadett C Coupé.
The model was initially called the Astra Coupé . From November 2000, the rear of the vehicle no longer read “Astra Coupé”, but only “Coupé”.
The coupé was available with five engines: four gasoline engines with 1.6 l and 76 kW (2004 only), 1.8 l with 85 or 92 kW, 2.2 l with 108 kW and the 2.0 l turbo with an output of 140, 141 or 147 kW . The only diesel had a displacement of 2.2 liters and developed 92 kW (available from 07/2002). Unlike other body styles, all engines were delivered with a 5-hole wheel connection. There was a 5-speed manual transmission as standard, an automatic transmission (4-speed) for the 2.2-liter gasoline engine was optionally available.
The 2.0-l turbo was delivered exclusively with 17-inch light-alloy wheels with five spokes and was fitted with a larger front brake system as standard.
The 2.2-liter gasoline engine introduced in the Astra Coupé was newly developed by GM. The engine with the designation Z22SE / L61, which was also installed in the convertible and the Opel Speedster , was the first engine in the successful L850 engine family.
Air conditioning was standard, but could be deselected. From model year 2002 an automatic climate control was available (depending on the variant also as standard). The standard equipment was very extensive compared to normal Astra-G models. Electric windows, electric adjustable and heated exterior mirrors and fog lights came as standard from the factory.
The palette of the selectable exterior colors differed from those of the normal Astra G. It was possible to choose from various colors, whereby only carbon black, European blue, magma red and Chianti red were available in all model years. Other colors were: Star Silver II and III, Mirage, Moonland Gray, Light Silver, Aruba Blue, Nocturno Blue, Breeze Blue, Saturn Blue, Sardinia Blue, China Blue, Blue Verde, Ural Green, Verde, Fern Green, Capriegelb and Sunrise Orange.

Cabriolet
Like the coupé, the convertible was designed by Bertone in Italy (quote: "Conceived by Opel, created by Bertone") and manufactured from March 2001.
It is a four-seater convertible with a fabric top , whereby the space in the rear - as is usual with such vehicles - does not consist of full-size seats. A solid trough is provided for the roof, so it does not take up any additional space, regardless of whether it is open or closed. This means that the trunk is correspondingly smaller compared to the coupé. The wind deflector can also be stowed there.
The engines were four petrol engines (1.6 l with 74/76 kW, 1.8 l with 92 kW, 2.2 l with 108 kW and 2.0 l turbo with 141/147 kW) and a diesel engine with 2 , 2 l displacement and 92 kW to choose from.
The convertible was only offered with an electric convertible top, as an option with remote control via the central locking system using a key. It was standard equipment on the 2.2 and 2.0 turbo models. Opening or closing takes about 25 seconds and assumes that the vehicle is stationary and the handbrake is on. In addition, all four side windows can be opened and closed simultaneously using a central switch.
In addition to the standard equipment variants , the convertible was offered as Linea Rossa and 90-year-old Bertone editions as well as in the Daytona and Silverstone equipment variants:
The Linea Rossa special model - advertised by Opel as "Haute Couture for elegant drivers" - was featured with a red and black nappa leather interior (seats, door panels), round instruments with a white background with red pointers, a leather steering wheel with remote control for the audio system, aluminum Gear knob and door sill strips with Linea Rossa lettering and special wheels. The remote-controlled hood was just as standard as the wind deflector. It was offered in the exterior colors magma red, carbon black, star silver, chianti red and light silver, with certain colors a red-colored hood could be ordered.
According to the occasion, the 90-year Bertone edition was offered with beige leather upholstery, black / silver-colored center console, round instruments with a white background, various Bertone logos as well as BBS aluminum rims and the special paintwork China blue (carbon black optional).
The Daytona convertible was presented with the slogan “Open to new legends” : cashmere beige fabrics, round instruments with a white background, leather steering wheel with remote control and leather and aluminum applications dominated the interior.
The Silverstone convertible was presented with a "homage to a myth" : Among other things, steel gray fabric and leather applications as well as gray seat belts, aluminum gear knob, leather steering wheel and instrument panel highlighted in white were the equipment features.
Technically, these special models did not differ from the standard models; however, the special equipment was only available in these versions.

Opel Performance Center
OPC
"OPC" (for Opel Performance Center ) temporarily replaced the "GSi" abbreviation ( Grand Sport injection ) at Opel in 1999 . The first Astra OPC was a sporty homologation edition of the Astra G, limited to 3000 copies. It was only delivered in black, star silver and arden blue.
He got various chassis and engine components from racing. The OPC 1 received, among other things, a 16-inch brake system with brake cooling and modified front wishbones and a more directly coordinated power steering. Compared to the standard model, a different rear axle was installed, the track values of which, together with the front axle, were adjusted to only one driver (sitting on the front left). The rear of the OPC 1 is steel-reinforced to ensure greater torsional rigidity.
The 2.0-16V engine was revised by the motorsport department to 18 kW more power than the normal version (100 kW to 118 kW). Manifolds , forged pistons, "sharper" camshafts , larger ducts and modified software increased the performance and should also deepen the overall sporty impression. An oil cooler is designed to keep the oil temperature lower in order to maintain the important lubricating properties of the oil when the engine is under high loads. A coolant thermostat with an opening temperature of 82 ° C was also used to lower the coolant temperature compared to the production engine.
The external appearance was not changed too much with the first OPC version. In addition to a large tail unit, which provides zero lift on the rear axle with a drag coefficient (c w ) of 0.30 (like the Porsche 911 GT3 ), a modified front lip, rear silencer, 17-inch BBS alloy wheels and OPC Sports mirror (Hagus) built in. The body was also lowered by 20 mm.
Inside there were Recaro sports seats without side airbags or height-adjustable Opel sports seats with side airbags and lumbar support. The most important features of the interior are the blue seat belts, the seat covers in skyline blue and the consecutive numbering of the OPC-1 models in the center console. As with the variants of the Astra "Sport", the instruments in the cockpit have a white background.
There were two variants for Germany, on the one hand the "Touring" version with anti-theft alarm system , electric window lifters, air conditioning, adjustable steering column, central locking (radio) and radio (basic price 46,450 DM / 23,749.51 €), and a "Sport" version without the additional equipment of the touring version, which weighed 50 kg less (base price 42,900 DM / 21,934.42 €). Both versions had the short-range F23 sports transmission, which was also available in the Opel Speedster, as well as traction control with intervention on the engine and brakes and an on-board computer with an integrated check control system.
Facelift and OPC 2
From September 2002 there was a new edition of the Astra G OPC with the facelift of the Astra G, which was unlimited.
The outer shape was now different from the normal version, modified front and rear aprons, side skirts, sports grille, darkened front and rear headlights are striking changes, the latter also affecting the more civilized Astra variants.
