The Chevrolet Suburban , a large SUV , is one of the most traditional vehicles from Chevrolet . The first version of the large and heavy car was built in 1935. To date, it is the largest mass-produced off-road vehicle with up to 9 seats and a widely used police and military vehicle in the USA , where it was also marketed as the GMC Suburban . In Australia he was offered briefly as the Holden Suburban .

Many automakers in the United States used the name "Suburban" to describe a combination with windows running on a commercial vehicle - frame based. With the end of production of the Dodge Town Wagon in 1966, only General Motors (GM) produced a Suburban.

In the early years, Chevrolet's Suburban was a large, front-engined, rear-wheel drive two-door station wagon, making it basically a heavy passenger car . From the 1960 model year, the Suburban was based on the chassis of a light truck ( pickup ) and was thus an off-road vehicle or later an SUV , initially with two doors. All-wheel drive was also available for the first time in this model generation .

In the years 1967 to 1972 the Suburban had three doors ("Three doors"), one on the driver's side and two on the passenger side. The vehicle was still available with two-wheel drive (2WD or rear-wheel drive) or four-wheel drive (4WD) and was stylistically based on the contemporary pick-ups from Chevrolet.

The third generation of the Suburban from 1973 to 1991 had five doors and had up to nine seats in an even larger body. It had a similar, emphasized angular but longer body, which was based on the Chevrolet Blazer of the K / K5 series (1969-1995), which made the Suburban the largest off-road vehicle built in series. In this series there was at times a permanent all-wheel drive with a central differential on request , otherwise, as before, with a connectable rigid through drive without a central differential gear .

The fourth series from 1991 to 1999, which on the GMT400 - platform is built, was stylistically and technically significantly modernized. In this model generation, too, the Suburban was available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Within the Chevrolet model range, the Suburban continued to rank as the largest off-road vehicle above the visually similar, shorter Chevrolet Tahoe of the first generation (identical to the two-door GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Blazer K5 from 1992 to 1995 ).

The version of the Suburban built from 1999 to 2005 is based on the GMT800 platform , on which the Cadillac Escalade ESV or the GMC Yukon XL (the new name for the GMC Suburban) are based. It still offers space for up to nine passengers.

The vehicle was available in many variants and equipment lines as well as in three engines:

From 1991 to 1999 with a 5.7-liter small-block - V8 engine with 254 horsepower, a 7.4-liter Bigblock -V8 engine with 290 horsepower and a 6.5-liter V8 small block diesel engine with Turbo charging and 195 hp.

From the end of 1999 to 2005 with a 5.3-liter Vortec small-block V8 engine with 217 kW (295 hp), a 6-liter V8 engine with 246 kW (335 hp) and an 8.1-liter -V8 big block with 235 kW (325 PS).

In the generation ( GMT900 platform) sold between 2006 and 2014 , the 8.1-liter big block engine was dispensed with and smaller Vortec V8 engines, which are optionally also E85- compatible, with up to 6 liters displacement and 259 kW maximum output.

The current generation on the GMTK2XX platform has been offered since 2014.

With the series based on the GMTT1XX platform , a new generation was presented at the end of 2019.

Chevrolet offered a station wagon that rested on the frame of the 0.5-ton light truck. This car was specially built for the National Guard and the Civilian Conservation Corps . Most of the superstructure was made of wood and had up to eight seats.

Chevrolet offered the new body version as "Carryall Suburban". It had the frame and front end of the half-ton truck from those years, but was an all-steel station wagon that differed little in shape from the contemporary "Woodies". The cars had up to 8 seats, 3 in the front, 2 in the middle and 3 in the back. The rear door was either hinged on the left and right with two leaves or horizontally divided into an upward-opening rear window and a downward-opening flap.

From 1937 General Motors marketed the model largely identically with the designation "Suburban", also under the independent GMC brand, which specializes in commercial vehicles .

The Suburban was built in the 1941, 1942 and 1946 model years. During the Second World War it was built as a military transport vehicle. This model also had up to 8 seats. The models with rear wing doors were called "3106", those with a divisible tailgate were called "3116". The Chevrolet version was equipped with an in-line six-cylinder engine with 3540 cm³ displacement, the GMC version with one with 3736 cm³.

In 1952 there was the Suburban with rear wing doors or horizontally split tailgate. As with the predecessor, the models with rear wing doors were called "3106", those with a divisible tailgate "3116". The front bench was divided into two seats on the left and one on the right. The latter could be pushed forward to access the rear seats. The middle row of seats consisted of a 2/3 bench that gave access to the rear row of seats. From 1953 a 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission was offered in the GMC models and in 1954 also in the Suburban from Chevrolet.

“Canopy Express” models (station wagons on the frame of a light truck) were offered for the last time in this generation.

The styling of the 1949 model inspired that of the Chevrolet HHR half a century later .

It wasn't until March 25, 1955, in the middle of the model year, that newly designed and styled Chevrolet Suburban were introduced. All Chevrolet models received a new look with a flatter bonnet, front fenders in line with the rest of the body and a trapezoidal grille. The Suburban shared the V-shaped speedometer with the brand's passenger car models.

The engines were in-line six-cylinder and small-block V8 engines. The Chevrolets had the V8 engine with 4342 cc and later 4638 cc, while GMC used a Pontiac -based V8 engine. The model numbers were carried over from the previous year, with the numbers "3156" for the all-wheel drive model with wing doors and "3166" for the one with a split tailgate being added in 1957 .

The styling of the 1960/1961 model years borrowed from the Chevrolet models of the 1950s. The vehicles had large oval air intakes above the grille. In 1960 there was a new independent front suspension and a panoramic windshield . There were double doors again and a horizontally split tailgate. From 1962 the large oval air inlets on the front disappeared again. In 1964, the cars received a flatter windshield and larger side windows. The payload increased to 520 kg.

For the first time, this generation featured factory-made all-wheel drive ("K") on all models. The rear-wheel drive "C" models had an independent suspension with torsion bar springs at the front and a rigid axle on drawn trailing arms and coil springs at the rear. In 1963, however, they returned to a more conventional suspension.

The Chevrolets were available with both in-line six-cylinder engines and small-block V8 engines. The GMC was also available with a 4998 cc V6 engine from GMC's mid-range truck line; with high torque, but also high fuel consumption. There were manual three- and four-speed transmissions and also a Powerglide automatic.

Stageway in Fort Smith , Arkansas , made a version for 15 passengers. These converted Suburban had three doors on the right side of the vehicle, a wheelbase of 4,343 mm and weighed 2,858 kg.

After 1966 there were no more one-ton trucks (C30).

The second generation of the C / K Suburban can be recognized by the single driver's door on the left and the two doors on the right. There were rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models.

There were V6 engines (e.g. from Chevrolet with 4785 cm³ and from GMC with 4998 cm³) and V8 engines with 4637 cm³, 5031 cm³, 5359 cm³, 5735 cm³ and 6555 cm³. A three-quarter tonner was available for the first time.

In this generation, the combination models C-10 and C-20 were offered for the last time, most recently in 1970.

In 1971, disc brakes were introduced on the front wheels, and in 1972 the rear-wheel drive versions last had coil springs on the rear axle. In 1972, a smaller case was also introduced for the air conditioning for the rear seat passengers. The devices available from 1967 previously took up the entire length of the roof. In 1971 there was an adjustable steering wheel on request.

Brazilian version

In 1964, Chevrolet introduced a 5-door version of the Suburban called Veraneio (also C-14/16) in Brazil . It was based on the 6th generation of the Suburban manufactured in the USA, but with a body specially developed for Brazil. Initially it was powered by an in-line six-cylinder engine from Chevrolet with a displacement of 4.2 liters, which was based on the "Stovebolt" engine produced until 1962. Later, the 4.1-liter engine of the Brazilian mid- size car Chevrolet Opala was used. The original version of the Varaneiro was made with a different grille and interior trim until 1988, but was then replaced by a modern version of the C-20 family.

In 1997, GM introduced the Silverado pickup truck in Brazil, which replaced the C-series. The Brazilian version of the Suburban, which was built in the same style as the American Tahoe from 1992 until 2001, was called the Grand Blazer and was the successor to the Varaneiro. The 4.1 liter engine with 103 kW was offered in both models. A 4.2-liter turbo diesel engine with 125 kW was also available on request.

With the 8th generation, the Suburban became a 5-door SUV. The body shape with the rounded lines was built almost unchanged for 19 years. There were versions with rear-wheel drive (C) or all-wheel drive (K), those with 0.5 tons. Payload and those with 0.75 to. (Designation "10" and "20" for Chevrolet, or "1500" and "2500" for GMC). The one-tonne truck was called “C30 / K30” at GMC and “3500” at Chevrolet.

The 1973 model year Suburban now had two doors on each side (the earlier generations only had one door on the driver's side), air conditioning for the front and middle rows of seats, a luggage rack, heating under the third row of seats and steps for easier entry . On request, the rear differential was equipped with an automatic lock.

The base engine was the Chevrolet small-block V8 engine with a displacement of 4998 cc. V8 engines with 5735 cm³ or 6555 cm³ displacement were available. For the first time there was also the Chevrolet big block V8 engine with 7440 cc. From 1982 the Detroit Diesel V8 engine with a displacement of 6211 cm³ and an output of 97 kW was also available. The diesel engine later became the most popular engine for the Suburban exported to Europe.

The three-stage automatic transmission Turbo-Hydra-Matic 350 was only available for the small-block engines. The Turbo-Hydra-Matic 400 was used for the big block engine and the diesel engine. In 1981 the four-stage automatic transmission Turbo-Hydra-Matic 700R4 was introduced for all small-block engines and the diesel engine. There were also packages with reduced final drives and additional coolers for heavy loads.

The equipment lines were the basic equipment and the better Silverado equipment. On request there was a third row of seats so that 9 people could be transported. There was also a rear heater as an option.

From 1981 there were automatically lockable wheel hubs for the front axle, so that the all-wheel drive could be switched on while driving, and the NP-205 middle differential was replaced by the NP-208 on most models.

In 1984 there were asbestos-free brake pads at the rear and a new grille in 1985. In 1985 a total of 64,670 Suburban were built.

In 1986 and 1987 the mixture preparation of gasoline engines was changed from carburettor to single point injection. The GM injection system is called Throttle Body Injection (TBI) and technically corresponds to Rochester Fuel Injection . It works with an extremely low injection pressure of 70 kPa. In 1990 the Suburban received an ABS for the rear axle and in 1991 the heavy-duty automatic transmission GM-4L80 was introduced.

From 1987 to 1991 the earlier Chevrolet C / K models were called R or V. This was done to avoid confusion with the Chevrolet C / K platform trucks, which were introduced in 1988.

Based on the GMT 400 , the Suburban was introduced in the 1992 model year. The similar pickup models were offered on newer platforms from model year 1998. There were again models with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, designated as "C" and "K", as well as those with 0.5 tons. and 0.75 to. Payload ("1500" and "2500").

The basic engine was the V8 engine with 5735 cc displacement (Chevrolet Small Block). The V8 engine with 7440 cm³ displacement (Chevrolet Big Block) was available on request in the 2500. The 6.5 liter turbo diesel engine was available in all versions on request, even if it was rarely ordered in the 1500.

For the 1500 there was the automatic transmission GM 4L60 with 4 stages, for the 2500 the more powerful automatic transmission GM 4L80. Manual transmissions were no longer offered.

With the GMT400, independent wheel suspensions were introduced at the front. The rear-wheel drive models have coil springs and the all-wheel drive models have torsion bars on the front axle. All models have a leaf-sprung rigid axle at the rear.

The 1995 Suburban accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.7 seconds. The turning circle diameter is 14.57 m.

The simplest configuration is the LS version, followed by the LT . There was either a bench or single seats in the first row of seats and there was a third row of seats on request. So between 2 and 9 seats can be realized.

From 1994 on there were innovations every year:

• In 1999, no changes were made until the introduction of the new 2000 models.

In 1998, Holden introduced a right-hand drive version of the Suburban for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The vehicles available with petrol or diesel engines have the dashboard of the right-hand drive Chevrolet Blazer (1995–2005). Due to quality defects and little interest from customers, these models were abandoned.

Based on the GMT800 , the Suburban were introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year. They were back in the 1500 and 2500 series. The equipment lines were Basic, LS and LT. On request there was switchable all-wheel drive and a trailer hitch.

For the new model series, the long-serving 5.7- and 7.4-liter V8 engines were no longer used, as was the 6.5-liter diesel engine. Instead there was a V8 engine with 5325 cc for the 1500 and one with 5965 cc for the 2500.

Also new were:

• Spare wheel under the car floor (instead of on the tailgate)
• Exit lamps in the rear-view mirrors for the LS and LT equipment lines
• New instrumentation with on-board computer and operating hours counter for the engine
• Automatic air conditioning for the LT equipment line
• Disc brakes on all four wheels
• Level control for the LS and LT equipment lines

In the 2001 model year , the maximum engine output of the 6.0-liter engine in the 2500 was increased by 15 kW. On request there was also the new V8 engine with 8128 cm³ displacement. OnStar was included as standard on the LS and LT models.

In the 2002 model year , various optional extras were standard in the LS model, such as B. Automatic air conditioning front and rear, aluminum wheels, electric windows, electrically adjustable front seats, running boards, fog lights and heated exterior mirrors. The basic equipment line was discontinued; there was only LS and LT. The 5.3 liter engine was approved for alcohol use. The 6.0 liter engine was no longer available in the 1500 series.

In the 2003 model year, all large GM trucks received a new interior with a modified center console and other improvements. There were new radios with RDS , XM satellite radio , Bose sound systems and improved ergonomics. On request, the height of the pedals could be adjusted and the on-board computer was improved so that it could display 34 vehicle functions. A Panasonic DVD system mounted in the headliner was also available on request . A vehicle dynamics control system was installed and the Suburban 2500 Series and the Yukon XL, there were four-wheel steering . The payload for vehicles equipped in this way has been reduced by 136 kg (the weight of the system).

In the 2004 model year , the 1500 series vehicles were equipped with a hydroboost braking system that had already been introduced in the 2500 series. The Suburban for the Mexican market received a new vehicle rear and a new vehicle front, which were similar to those of the Silverado.

In the 2005 model year , the rear doors hinged on the left and right were no longer delivered, only the tailgate that was previously installed as an optional extra. Some engines received an electric cooling system to run more fuel-efficiently, only the 6.0-liter and 8.1-liter engines in the 0.75-ton model (2500) retained their engine-driven fan. The Z71 package - for a long time only available in the all-wheel drive Suburban - was now also available in the rear-wheel drive. OnStar was standard on all models. Finally, the vehicle dynamics control was installed as standard in all 0.5 ton models (1500).

In the 2006 model year , the final model year of the GMT800-based Suburban, there was a special LTZ package with 20-inch wheels, all-wheel drive and the 6.0-liter engine with engine code LQ4 of the 2500 series. The catalytic converter was closer to Engine installed. XM radio antenna and OnStar antenna have been combined into one unit.

Conversion as a two-way vehicle

The 2007 models were presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006 . Production of the GMT900 models started in March 2006 and the first copies were available from dealers in April 2006.

The new models had a more modern, less angular design that had already been seen in the Chevrolet Tahoe that was introduced earlier . The outer shape has been aerodynamically improved, which is also due to the flatter windshield.

Inside, the dashboard and seats in particular have been redesigned. Only in the LS equipment line there are 9 seats; the LT2 and LT3 have leather seats for 6, 7 or 8 passengers. In the LT2 and LT3 there is also the option of the Z71 package with two-tone leather seats, which all Suburbans produced in Mexico - including the nine-seaters - have. The Suburban LTZ was supplied as standard with a DVD player, navigation system and radio with touch screen.

In the 2010 model year, when the US News & World Report voted the Suburban the best affordable SUV, a new premium interior package was introduced that includes three-zone climate control, Bluetooth and radio controls from the rear seats. All radio models supplied as standard have a USB port. The 6.0 liter engine is also suitable for E85 . Finally, there were minor changes to the front of the vehicle, such as a slightly raised bumper. Side airbags were now installed as standard.

In February 2010, Chevrolet presented a 75-year edition of the Suburban, which was provided with LTZ equipment, three-layer paintwork on the outside and a cashmere interior. 20 ″ chrome wheels, new roof rails, GPS navigation integrated into the radio, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth, reversing camera, rear parking assistant, remote start function, height-adjustable pedals, leather seats and heated / cooled front seats were standard.

The engines with 5.3 liters and 6.0 liters displacement were still available; a new 6.2 liter V8 engine with 301 kW was added. The 8.1 liter V8 engine was discontinued with the predecessor.

Rear view

The twelfth generation of the Suburban (internal model name GMTK2YC) was presented in 2013. The formal show premiere took place at the LA Auto Show that year. It is based on the GMTK2XX platform . In 2014 the vehicle went on sale with a 5.3-liter V8 petrol engine with a maximum output of 250 kW. In 2015 the engine was made suitable for the E85 and the maximum output was increased to 265 kW. In the summer of 2018, the Suburban RST was also presented with a 6.2-liter V8 gasoline engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission and a maximum output of 313 kW.

In December 2019, together with the shorter Chevrolet Tahoe, a new series (internal model name GMTT1YC) was presented on General Motors' GMTT1XX platform in Detroit. The engines available from market launch are a 5.3-l V8 with a maximum output of 265 kW, a 6.2-l V8 petrol engine with 313 kW and a 3.0-l R6 diesel engine with a maximum output of 207 kW Turbo charging and common rail injection . The only transmission available is a ten-speed automatic transmission. Together with the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Suburban will be built at the GM plant in Arlington , Texas. For the first time, the rigid axle suspension on the rear axle, which was used in the previous generations, was swapped for a multi-link rear axle .
