The Holden Sunbird was a mid -range passenger car that was manufactured by Holden in Australia as a four-cylinder version of the LX / UC Torana between model years 1976 and 1980 .
Until November 1976 the car was still called the LX Torana, when the model with the weakest engine became the LX Sunbird . The 4-door sedan had a four-cylinder in-line engine with 1,897 cm 3 displacement and 100-102 bhp (74-75 kW) power, which was supplied by Opel . The simply equipped car had a manual four-speed gearbox as standard or, on request, a three-speed automatic. Its appearance was essentially the same as that of the Torana; only small changes (e.g. radiator grille and chrome-plated hubcaps) set it apart.
In May 1977 Holden brought out a second model, a 3-door station wagon coupe.
The successor, the UC Sunbird , appeared in March 1978 in three equipment levels: Sunbird, Sunbird SL and Sunbird SL / E. The simple Sunbird was only available with a manual transmission. The vehicle differed from its predecessor in that it had rectangular headlights and a modified front section. The Opel engines still delivered 92–98 bhp (68–72 kW), but were replaced by the Holden “Starfire” engine in September 1978. This was a little smaller in displacement (1,892 cm 3 ) and made only 84 bhp (62 kW). At the end of 1979 the station wagon coupés (together with the sister model Torana) were discontinued. The 4-door sedans were built until September 1980.
