The MB Barina was introduced as the smallest Holden vehicle in February 1985. The 5-door station wagon was manufactured by Suzuki for Holden and was based on the Suzuki Swift AA . There was only one equipment line and only one body shape, rectangular headlights and a radiator grille with four horizontal, black plastic louvers. There were small, fixed side windows between the rear doors and the C-pillars. A four-cylinder engine with 1.3 liter displacement, overhead camshaft and an output of 49.5 kW served as drive. This was transmitted to the front wheels via a manual five-speed gearbox. The most important selling point was the low fuel consumption of 5.2 liters / 100 km.
In January 1986 there was a slightly revised model, the ML Barina . The radiator grille only had two slats, which were kept in body color and the tailgate had got a small spoiler. Technically everything remained the same, only the rear axle was provided with coil springs instead of leaf springs. From April 1987, an automatic transmission with three speed levels was available on request.
The ML Barina was produced until January 1989.

In January 1989, the completely redesigned MF Barina was introduced. It was developed by Suzuki together with GM and was also offered as Suzuki Swift EA , Pontiac Firefly or Geo Metro in Japan, Europe and the USA. At first there was only a 5-door station wagon, in August 1990 the three-door GS was then submitted. The body had been redesigned aerodynamically and now showed a steeply sloping front and windows glued in without edges. There were no mechanical changes.
The revision of the MH Barina came in September 1991. The facelift was limited to the front bumper, which now turned out differently for five-door and three-door models and in each case had a slightly larger cooling air intake.
The first four Barina models were rated as used cars as having significantly below average safety.

Starting in 1994, Holden supplied the GM Group Opel Corsa B , which was manufactured in Spain , as SB Barina . Three and five-door station wagons and even a two-door convertible were available. For the three-door there were engines with 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 liter displacement and 33–80 kW output, the five-door, like the convertible, had a 1.4-liter engine with 44 kW. The equipment lines were called City , Joy , Swing , Grand Prix (special model), Lambada (special model), Olympic Edition (special model for 2000), Equipe (special model) and GSi (only three-door with 1.6-liter engine).
At the end of 1998 there was a slight revision of the models with a new injection system, improvements in the wheel suspension, a radiator grille with three horizontal bars and bumpers, some of which were painted in body color.

As a result of the switch to the Opel Corsa C in Europe in 2000, the SB Barina was also converted to the XC Barina in 2001 . Again, 3- or 5-door station wagons were available, but the convertible was no longer available. The vehicles were powered by a 1.4-liter engine with an output of 66 kW; in September 2001 the '' GSi '' with the new 1.8-liter R4 with an output of 92 kW was added.
In 2003 there were the better equipped versions SXi and CD in addition to the previously offered SRi . Since the hoped-for, better sales success did not materialize, these designations were dropped again in the 2004 vintage.
The Barina was offered on an Opel Corsa basis until December 2005.

The TK Barina was introduced in December 2005 and is derived from the Chevrolet Kalos . From February 2006, there was a 3-door or 5-door station wagon as well as a 4-door notchback sedan. The cars had 16-valve engines with a displacement of 1.2 to 1.6 liters and between 53 and 77 kW of power.
In August 2008, a revised model was presented with rectangular headlights that were slightly upwards, a modified grille and other rear lights. In addition, the vehicles were equipped with side impact protection and two airbags as standard. Electric windows and mirrors that can be adjusted electrically have also been part of the standard equipment since then. This gave the Barina a good safety rating.
