In July 1989 the successor to the Astra LD appeared . It was called LE Nova and was based on the Toyota Corolla E90 . Unlike the original in Japan, the LE Nova was only available as a 4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon. The motorization also differed from the Corolla: There was a 1.4-liter four-cylinder in-line engine with 60 kW and an engine of the same design with 1.6 l displacement and an output of 67 kW. As with the Nissan-based predecessor, there were three trim levels: SL - available only as a hatchback - SL / X and SL / E . There was also a choice of three different transmissions: a manual five-speed transmission was standard; On request, the SL and SL / X could be equipped with a three-stage automatic, the SL / E with a four-stage.
The slightly revised successor LF Nova came in October 1991 and showed a slightly changed front and rear, as well as some mechanical improvements. All models with the exception of the SL now had the 1.6-liter engine - which was available with a carburetor (67 kW) or injection (76 kW) - and the SL / E was only available as a notchback sedan. For this purpose, the sporty GS model was available from October 1992 as a syringe model in the station wagon series . Its equipment was essentially the same as that of the SL / E, but its seats were covered with flatter fabric and it had a sports steering wheel with thick spokes. Above all, however, it was the only model to have the 1.8-liter engine with 86 kW.
From 1993 the SL / E was no longer offered. The 1.4-liter engine was also eliminated.

From 1994 there was the LG Nova , which was based on the Toyota Corolla E10, which had been offered in Japan since 1992 . The changes were accordingly: The car was a little bigger and was only available with the two injection engines. There were only two equipment lines left: the SL / X with a 1.6-liter R4 engine and the sporty GS with a 1.8-liter R4 engine, both as a notchback and a station wagon.
