The Holden Camira was a middle class passenger car that was manufactured by Holden in Australia from 1982 to 1989 as the successor to the UC Torana and UC Sunbird models.
The first of the GM J-Cars , the JB Camira , came out in August 1982 as Holden's first front-wheel drive car . A similar car was in the UK as a Vauxhall Cavalier and in Germany as Opel Ascona C offered. In the USA the corresponding model was called Pontiac J2000 , in Japan Isuzu Aska . The Camira was most likely based on the Opel, but used the 3-stage Hydramatic automatic transmission from GM . The cars had manual 4- or 5-speed transmissions as standard. Opel also designed the 1.6-liter R4 engine, which, however, was completely manufactured in Australia. In March 1983, a 5-door station wagon was added as a second model.
The styling of the vehicles was similar to that of the contemporary VH Commodore . The front showed rectangular headlights with attached indicators and in between a radiator grille with six black slats. There were three equipment variants: SL, SL / X and SL / E. At the end of 1983 the SJ was added as a sports version of the SL.
In November 1984 the successor JD Camira was presented. The main difference in styling was the new front, which with its angled rectangular headlights and the missing radiator grille was reminiscent of the Ford models Sierra (1987) and Scorpio (1985) . The 1.8-liter R4 engines with EFI injection were also new, producing 86 to 115 bhp (63 to 85 kW) depending on compression. In January the old 1.6-liter engine was dropped. At the same time, an A8Q package (automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning) was introduced for the SL / X , which made it a luxurious executive . A Formula package was available on request from September 1986 .
The JE Camira appeared in April 1987 and showed hardly any changes on the outside. Only the lion on the hood that was pulled down was replaced by the word "Holden" and there was a narrow gap towards the front bumper, which with a lot of imagination could be called a radiator grille. A 2.0-liter R4 engine with 115 bhp (85 kW) was new. The four-speed gearbox was no longer offered. There were two sporty versions: The JE Camira Sli2000 corresponded to the earlier JB Camira SJ and comprised aluminum rims and a small plastic spoiler on the tailgate. The well-known Formula package was also offered.
