The Holden ECOmmodore is a hybrid concept vehicle based on the Holden VT Commodore , which GM's Australian subsidiary Holden developed together with CSIRO . It has a 2.0-l R4 petrol engine in conjunction with an electric motor that is fed by lead-acid batteries . It is now on display at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney .

The car was unveiled at the Melbourne International Motor Show in May 2000 and appeared at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the Hanover Fair during 2001 .

The car also appeared as a VIP vehicle at the torch relay of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. It was never produced in series, but remained a concept vehicle.

At the moment - more than eight years after its introduction - the ECOmmodore remains little more than a marketing concept, with the manufacturer considering the production of a larger and even more powerful hybrid vehicle.

There have been reports that Holden plans to build a hybrid version of the Holden VE Commodore in 2010 to increase sales at home and abroad.
