The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization ( CSIRO ) is Australia's government agency for scientific and industrial research. The office is in Canberra . There are 13 research departments. 1916 the Advisory Council of Science and Industry (German advisory body for science and industry ) was founded. In 1926 it was renamed and given its current name.

The agency's achievements include atomic spectroscopy , the first plastic banknotes , insect repellents , various genetic engineering methods and the introduction of myxomatosis to curb the rabbit plague in Australia. In October 2005, the journal Nature reported that CSIRO researchers had succeeded in artificially producing resilin , which will make it possible to produce an almost perfect rubber.

CSIRO researchers developed the fundamentals of WLAN technology and the agency held the relevant patent. However, the right of the CSIRO to demand patent fees has been challenged by corporations such as Microsoft , Apple and Dell and sued in a class action lawsuit.

The authority has over 6600 employees. It operates 55 research facilities in Australia, France and Mexico .
