Toyota Conquest , Toyota Corolla Conquest and Toyota Tazz are passenger cars of the Japanese automobile brand Toyota .
Launch
In 1986 Toyota launched the Toyota Conquest (in markets other than Corolla ) in South Africa. At the same time, however, Toyota had the identical hatchback model series called Toyota Tazz on offer. A battle between three automobile brands broke out in South Africa for the largest share of the South African market. The main competitors were the VW models Chico Golf , Citi Golf and the Ford model series Laser and Tracer . Volkswagen was able to keep number 1 until 2000 and was replaced by Toyota after the facelift of the Tazz.
After production was discontinued in 2006, the Chico Golf was once again the best-selling automobile in South Africa. The second generation of the Toyota Tazz was commissioned by the Toyota Motor Corporation in 1991 from the Australian GM subsidiary Holden . This then produced the Tazz for Japan and South Africa under the name Toyota Corolla Conquest . On the Australian market, Holden ran the Corolla offshoot as Toyota Tazz and under its own label as Holden Nova .

South Africa
As a competitor to the successful VW models Chico Golf and Citi Golf , Toyota established the two sister models Toyota Conquest and Toyota Tazz in 1986 . These were based on the current Corolla hatchback from Japan and should put Toyota No. 1 among the best-selling cars in South Africa. However, although different model versions were offered, the Toyota Motor Corporation did not succeed in achieving the set goal for the time being.
Conquest and Tazz represented the brand's entry-level model as a small car (hatchback). The notchback model and the station wagon still bore the name Toyota Corolla . Despite all of this, there were all kinds of optional extras to choose from with Conquest and Tazz. For a short time, Toyota offered the Tazz as a special Run Roof model with a sunroof. One panel van that was identical to the Tazz was named Toyota Carri . It was not until 2000, after the Tazz had received a facelift, that Toyota achieved the desired first place in the registration statistics. The Conquest expired in May 2001. The panel van Carri, on the other hand, has also undergone the same facelift. Production of both models did not end until August 2006.
Australia
In Australia, however, the Tazz was built by GM subsidiary Holden. Officially, only the hatchback was offered. Notchback sedans and station wagons as Toyota Corolla Conquest Sédan and Toyota Corolla Conquest Wagon were also exported to Japan . But Holden sold small numbers of them back under the Toyota model name SL Tazz for the domestic and New Zealand home markets. Holden had offered Nova under its own label as Holden SL . In 1991 the Australian models were face lifted for the first time and were now considered the second generation.

The second generation was only built in Australia by GM subsidiary Holden. Like its predecessor, Holden also exported the second generation to Japan as the Toyota Corolla Conquest . An additional market was now South Africa in which the model was ranked as an independent model series alongside Toyota Corolla , the Toyota Conquest and the local Toyota Tazz . With slow sales, Holden finally replaced the model series with the Holden TR Astra . The second generation achieved the best sales figures in South Africa with a total of 98,000 units.
