The Toyota Echo is a passenger car model from the Japanese manufacturer Toyota , which was designed by Sotiris Kovos . It is the notchback counterpart and coupe of the Toyota Yaris . Under the name Echo , the vehicle was sold in North America from 1999 and there had a differently designed front section and different exterior mirrors than the Yaris. Between 1999 and 2004, around 150,000 units of the Echo were sold in the USA.
In Japan the Echo was marketed as Toyota and in Southeast Asia as Toyota Vios . In the People's Republic of China , the Echo has been offered under the name Xiali Vela since 2002 . The Echo sold only moderately in America because the car was too small for the conditions there. Unlike the Yaris, the Echo was only available with a 1.5 liter 108 hp engine. It was optionally supplied with a 5-speed gearbox or a four-speed automatic.
The successor to the Echo is the Toyota Belta , which in turn is based on the Toyota Yaris (from 2006).
