With the introduction of the Passo, Toyota tried to target female customers. The first technical defects became apparent shortly after the start of series production, so that many vehicle parts used had to be replaced with new ones. The Daihatsu sister model, on the other hand, has not had any defects to date. When the shortcomings increased, Toyota decided to use Daihatsu engines. 3-cylinder engines of the 1KR-FE type with a displacement of 996 cm³ and outputs of 50 kW or 53 kW (67 PS and 71 PS) each at 6000 rpm and a torque of 90 Nm were used at 4800 rpm or 94 Nm at 3600 rpm. For model versions with higher demands, Toyota chose the 4-cylinder K3-VE engine with a displacement of 1297 cm³ and an output of 68 kW (92 hp) and a torque of 123 Nm at 4400 rpm.

The Passo was only available in the STD and Racy versions with a 4-stage automatic. With the top model TRD Sport M, however, there was a choice between a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Over time, Toyota also established other model versions. So on April 27, 2005, the X model appeared , which was only available with a black leather interior and was even equipped with a Nitrious Express nitrous oxide injection ex works. The X HID Limited also had an LPG tank and darkened headlights and rear lights. On June 5, 2006, the two special models were then replaced by the X Advanced Edition . In the meantime, more and more technical defects occurred in some vehicles, so that many units were ordered back to the workshops on December 25th to check the engine mountings and replace them if necessary.
