The Toyota T100 was a large pickup truck that Toyota introduced as a 1993 model in late 1992. Toyota stated that the T100 should be used as an alternative to the smaller pickups such as the. B. the Hilux , but the clientele criticized that it was too small to attract those interested in large construction site pickups. The curb weight is given as 1506 kg. Many also complained about the lack of a V8 engine, but Toyota said it was intentionally not installed in order to offer an economical vehicle that combined the advantages of a large pickup truck with the handling of a small pickup. While this was Toyota's official marketing plan, rumors surfaced that the company wanted GM's 305 cu.in small-block V8s. (5.0 l displacement) and 350 cu.in. (5.7 l displacement). Nobody knows whether this was the case; The fact is, however, that the T100 never got a V8 engine and this was a major obstacle to sales.

Sales were very weak at first, but in 1996 US sales topped 40,000 units / year. Even if these were very promising figures for Toyota at that time, one must consider that GM sold 700,000 pickups a year, Ford between 550,000 and 850,000 units and Dodge sold between 100,000 and 400,000 units after the introduction of the new Ram in 1994. Whether it was due to this new model or not, sales of the T100 fell about 30% when the new Ram was introduced 6 months after the T100.

Despite these criticisms of size and engine size, the T100 garnered some good media reviews when it received the Best Large Pickup of the Year award from Popular Science magazine's Best Newcomer of the Year award in the year it was launched by JD Power & Ass . The T100 was the first car to receive the Initial Quality Survey Award in the year it was launched. The T100 also received this award in the following years, 1994 and 1995. In 1997 it was still in the top three vehicles in this category.

When Toyota was firmly established in the compact pickup market in the USA in the 1980s and 1990s, it seemed logical to many that the manufacturer wanted to enter the market for large pickups as well. The rumors went on for many years before they became a reality in 1993, and the first large Toyota pickup had a 1.5-foot flatbed but the engine and chassis of a compact pickup. It was a bit bigger than the Dodge Dakota , but still smaller than the typical large pickups. This gave the T100 a special place in the line of pickups. It was economical and reliable, but not a great sales success, so that Toyota could not achieve the market share it had hoped for. Though many buyers disagreed, the T100 was just too small, albeit larger than Toyota's other pickup truck, the Hilux and its successor, the Tacoma .

Furnishing

When the T100 was introduced, it was only available in one version, a normal flatbed truck, and with an engine, a 3.0 l V6 with 150 bhp (110 kW) and a torque of 244 Nm. In 1994, a 2.7 l R4 engine was added, which also developed 150 bhp (110 kW) and developed a torque of 240 Nm. This was done in the hope that promises of lower gas mileage and lower purchase price would attract new buyers. Eventually, however, Toyota found that there was no alternative to a more powerful engine, and in 1995 the 3.4L V6 with an output of 190 bhp (140 kW) and a torque of 298 Nm was added. Later in the year, an Xtra Cab (extended cabin) was added. In addition to the additional engines and body shape, the T100 has seen only a few changes during its entire production period. From 1994 an airbag was installed for the driver (the front passenger never received one) and from 1997 406 mm (16 ″) high side walls were built as standard in the all-wheel drive models. At the end of 1996 / beginning of 1997 it was already clear that Toyota would develop the successor ( Tundra ). In the late 1990s, many thought these developments would lead to a revised T100 (which would be fitted with a V8 engine) and there were also reports of converted and V8 equipped test vehicles. Ultimately, however, nothing came of it and Toyota presented the completely redesigned Tundra.

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) installed a compressor in the 3.4 liter V6 engine in 1997. This engine was available in the T100, the Tacoma , the 4Runner and later in the Tundra . The output was increased to up to 265 bhp (195 kW) - depending on the version of the compressor - and the torque rose to 339–359 Nm.

The T100 was built and partly designed by the Toyota subsidiary Hino . There were three equipment lines, the base model , the DX and the top model SR5 . The maximum trailer load was 2,360 kg and the payload was 1,112 kg. Most of the vehicles ran as ½-tonne trucks, but there was also a 1-tonne model (rear-wheel drive only) for a while, until it was finally phased out due to a lack of demand.

All T100 were built in Tokyo . The T100 was the last pickup truck built in Japan for the USA. In 1998 Toyota built its own production facility in Gibson County, Indiana, USA , where the new Tundra was built. The selling price for the Japan-built T100 included 25% import duty. In 1998 the production of the T100 was stopped. The successor was the Tundra with a V8 engine. These pickups became very popular as used cars because they were very reliable and have a high resale value 15 years after their introduction.
