The Corona Premio (Japanese: コ ロ ナ プ レ ミ オ) is a model series presented in February 1996 by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota and the successor to the Toyota Corona of the T190 series. In contrast to its predecessors, the new model was designed and offered as a subcompact . The new Corona Premio was only available as a four-door model. Many components were taken over from the Avensis presented in 1998 .

Airbags for driver and front passenger, ABS, ESP, radio with CD player and the three-point seat belt were standard. The most popular optional extras included the sun canopy, automatic climate control and one of the sports packages.

The following engines were available:

  • 4A-FE with 1587 cm³ displacement and an output of 105 PS (77 kW)
  • 7A-FE with 1762 cm³ displacement and an output of 115 PS (92 kW)

After tests by the GOA (State Center for Traffic Safety) in March 2003, the Corona Premio received devastating ratings. The result of several crash tests showed that neither the frame nor the body offered the passengers sufficient protection. The side impact protection had not done its job. The airbags are also not correctly installed in the vehicle compartment, so there is an additional risk to all occupants. Further defects were found on the rear lights. According to the GOA, these did not have the necessary effect. The lights are difficult to see from a distance because the rear lights are too dark. In a detailed test, GOA also criticized the automatic air conditioning, which is set very cold and cannot be regulated above 20 ° C. In a public appeal, Toyota was then asked to make the necessary corrections.

Without any changes, the Corona Premio was finally built further and in April 1998 a new engine was added to the range:

  • 3C-TE (TDI) with 2196 cm³ displacement and an output of 176 PS (129 kW)

The new diesel version was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission as standard. From now on this was optional for the other model versions. A manual 4-speed gearbox was specified as standard. The petrol engines have meanwhile been converted to direct injection without changing the performance.

After 44 years and five months, production of the Toyota Corona finally ended in December 2001. By then, 10,788,000 units of the Corona , CoronaLine , Corona Mark II and Corona EXiV model series had been built.
