The Kluger V was introduced in autumn 2000. The model was built and offered in both Japan and Australia . According to the original plans, the Kluger V should join the Harrier as a luxury SUV . But these plans were discarded by Toyota and the Kluger V was now used in the middle class. There the model competed with the Nissan Safari , Nissan X-TRAIL and the Mazda Tribute .

Toyota used for the base engine in Japan 2AZ-FE - petrol engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters and an output of 160 hp. The top engine ceased 1MZ-FE - engine , which had a capacity of 3.0 liters and an output of 220 hp. In Australia, however, the 1MZ-FE was used as the basis. The top engine here was a 3MZ-FE engine with an output of 211 hp.

The luxury version of the Kluger followed in April 2003 with the Kluger L . In this version ABS, ESP, radio with CD player, navigation system, leather comfort seats, fog lights and multifunction steering wheel were standard. The L version was only offered in Japan. There was no engine selection for the model. Only the 1MZ-FE was used for the L version. At the same time, Toyota replaced the 4-speed automatic of the Kluger models with a 5-speed automatic transmission. A manual version of the Kluger was only available in Australia.

In March 2005, the Kluger series was supplemented by a hybrid version based on the Kluger L, the Kluger Hybrid (Japanese: ク ル ー ガ ー ハ イ ブ リ ッ ド). The THS II ( TOYOTA Hybrid System II ) was used here. At Kluger Hybrid, there were two engine combinations to choose from:

Both engine combinations in the THS II resulted in a total output of 272 hp.

An all-wheel drive version of the Kluger Hybrid was called the E-Four and was the best-selling version of the hybrid model in Japan. In contrast to the Kluger L and Kluger V, the Kluger hybrid models were only available with a CVT transmission.

The L version was withdrawn from the program in February 2006. The basic versions were taken out of the program towards the end of the year and replaced by the Toyota Vanguard . In Australia, on the other hand, the model name remained and was aligned with the model change in Japan.
