The Matrix appeared in the fall of 2002 for the 2003 model year. It differs from the Pontiac Vibe in the differently designed front and rear sections.
From 2002 to 2006, the Vibe was offered as a basic model, a more powerful GT and an all-wheel drive model. For the 2007 model year, the model range was limited to the basic model; All-wheel drive and GT models no longer met the new emissions standards in the USA.
The Matrix uses 1.8-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder in-line engines, with 94–97 kW (128–132 hp) in the basic model (manual or automatic) and 88–94 kW (120–128 hp) in the all-wheel drive version (automatic only) ) and in the XRS (only six-speed manual transmission) produce 122–135 kW (167–183 hp).
For the 2005 model year, there was a slight facelift with changes to the front and rear lights and a redesign of the dashboard.
