Brookhaven is a city ( town ) in Suffolk County of the US state of New York . It stretches from the north to the south coast of Long Island and had a population of 486,040 at the 2010 census. It is not a city in the true sense, but an administrative association of a larger, very differently populated area without a clear center.
An unincorporated hamlet (not self-governing settlement) and census-designated place (statistical area) within the city also bears the name Brookhaven.
geography
Brookhaven is with 1376.7 km² the largest city in the state of New York . The north coast is on Long Island Sound , in the south a large part of the Great South Bay belongs to the urban area, so that 704.7 km² is water and only 671.9 km² is land area. The barrier island Fire Island separates the bay from the open Atlantic .
The neighboring cities are Smithtown and Islip to the west and Riverhead and Southampton to the east.

There is also the Poospatuck Indian Reservation with 271 residents (2004).
history
In today's area of Brookhaven originally different tribes lived Metoac - Indians . As the first European settlement, today's Setauket was established in the north under the name Ashford in 1655 . The so-called Nicolls patent from March 7, 1666 the name of Brookhaven was first written for the larger area, recognition as a city or town 1788 took place until 1789, the city government was in Setauket, was then Coram , and later on to Medford laid .
In earlier centuries most of Brookhaven's settlements lived off agriculture, fishing and shipbuilding . In the 20th century, some places became urbanized , while others developed into sparsely populated residential areas.

education and Science
The Brookhaven National Laboratory is one of the largest research institutions in the United States, which is primarily for its particle accelerator RHIC is known. The Brookhaven area is also home to the main campus of the State University of New York at Stony Brook .
Infrastructure
Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is located in Ronkonkoma, which is part of Brookhaven and part of Islip . The Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station to Port Jefferson , Greenport ( Ronkonkoma branch ) and Montauk and the Long Island Expressway (Interstate 495) traverse the city area. There is a ferry service from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport , Connecticut . The Patchogue tram only ran from 1911 to 1919.
