Old Field is a place on the north coast of Long Island in the US state of New York . It has the status of a incorporated village within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County . According to the 2010 census, the village had 918 inhabitants.

Old Field has an area of ​​5.7 km², of which 5.4 km² is land and 0.3 km² is water. It occupies the area of ​​a peninsula in the Long Island Sound . It borders Stony Brook to the south and Setauket-East Setauket to the southeast . To the north is a lagoon called Flax Pond , which is an important natural area. Old Field is separated from another peninsula belonging to Setauket ( Strongs Neck ) by Conscience Bay , a sandy spur extends further east into Port Jefferson Harbor , on the other side of which are Poquott , Port Jefferson and Belle Terre . The place name (English for Old Field ) refers to an area used for agriculture by Indians and fallow when the Europeans arrived. The place was settled by these later than the more inland areas and initially only used as pasture. The first known development dates from 1725. A first lighthouse was built in 1823. For a long time it was characterized by agriculture and fishing until it became a residential and holiday resort for the rich in the early 20th century.
