Fire Island Pines is a hamlet in the Brookhaven parish in Suffolk County , New York . It is located on Fire Island , a spit island on the south side of Long Island . The 2010 census showed a population of 292 for Fire Island. However, this only represents the number of year-round residents; As a holiday resort, the number of summer guests (especially on the weekends) is significantly larger.
Fire Island Pines is affectionately known as "Chelsea with Sand". ( Chelsea is known as the gay district in Manhattan .) Together with the neighboring hamlet of Cherry Grove , Fire Island Pines forms the lesbian and gay district of Fire Island. The large houses are usually rented as holiday homes by several parties, so that, for example, a 5 ZKB house is usually occupied by 8 adults. The majority of the population is made up of gays between the ages of 20 and 50. Two of the most famous events in the Pines are the Pines Party , an August dance party that is held on the beach and runs all night, and the Invasion of the Pines , a parade of drag queens that takes place on July 4th ( U.S. National Day).
