Suffolk County is a county in the state of New York that occupies about the eastern half of Long Island . At the 2010 census , the county had 1,493,346 people and a population density of 632 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Riverhead .

history

The county was named after their homeland, Suffolk , by the early settlers of New York Province . It was founded on November 1, 1683.

The Montauk Point Lighthouse (2005) is one of eleven National Historic Landmarks in the county.

Eleven locations in the county have National Historic Landmark status . A total of 301 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).
