Smithtown is a city in Suffolk County in the US state of New York . It is located on the north coast of Long Island and has a population of around 117,801. An unincorporated hamlet and census-designated place within the city also bears the name Smithtown.

history

The city was first settled around 1650. According to a local legend, the Indians told the explorer Smith that he could keep the land that he could prepare in a day on a bull. The land he was able to prepare is roughly the size of the city of Smithtown today . There is a large statue of Smith's bulls, also known as Whisper, which is on a highway near town. Smithtown was originally called Smithfield.
