Kyle Charles Palmieri (born February 1, 1991 in Smithtown , New York ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League since June 2015 . The right winger previously spent five years in the Anaheim Ducks organization .
Career
Kyle Palmieri began his career as a hockey player in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , for which he was active from 2007 to 2009 in the junior division of the North American Hockey League . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in the first round as a total of 26th player by the Anaheim Ducks . The winger then attended the University of Notre Dame for a year , for whose ice hockey team he also played in the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
In the 2010/11 season , the American made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Anaheim Ducks, scoring a goal in a total of eleven games. Most of the season he spent, however, with Anaheim's farm team Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League , for which he scored 51 points in 62 games, including 29 goals. Because of his achievements, he was allowed to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic .
In the following season Palmieri was able to increase his point yield in the AHL and reached 58 points scorer for Syracuse. In December 2011 he was promoted from the Ducks and collected in 18 games, interrupted by a temporary return to Syracuse Crunch, seven points and had two "multi-point games". Since Anaheim missed the playoffs, Palmieri was sent back to Syracuse, which, however, lost to the St. John's IceCaps in the first round in four games.
Palmieri spent the first half of the 2012/13 season with the Norfolk Admirals, the Anaheim Ducks' new farm team. However, since these often weakened over the first half of the season, he only accumulated 25 points in 33 games. After the lockout ended, he was able to secure a place in the Ducks squad in January. The AHL All-Star scored 13 points in 28 games. On February 27, 2013 he scored his first hat trick in the NHL when he formed a series with the all-stars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf and they assisted him with all goals, Palmieri also scored his third game-winning goal in this game.
During the NHL Entry Draft 2015 Palmieri was handed over to the New Jersey Devils , who in turn transferred a second-round vote for this draft and a third-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2016 to Anaheim. In New Jersey, the attacker advanced to the team's top scorer with 30 goals and 27 assists in the 2015/16 season and then signed a new five-year contract in July 2016, earning him an average annual salary of 4.65 million US dollars.
International
For the USA , Palmieri took part at junior level in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2008 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2010 and 2011 . At the U18 World Cup in 2008 and the U20 World Cup in 2011, he and his team won the bronze medal, and at the U20 World Cup 2010 even the gold medal.
For the 2012 World Cup , Palmieri was nominated for the first time in the squad of the US senior selection for the world title bouts. During the course of the competition, he was on the ice in seven USA games, scoring two goals and two assists . Finally he lost with the team in the quarterfinals against Finland .
For the World Cup of Hockey 2016 he was nominated to replace Ryan Callahan in Team USA, but was eliminated with the team in the group stage.
Style of play
Palmieri's style of play corresponds to the so-called "sniper", i.e. the player in ice hockey who is characterized by his good scoring. He is specifically looking for his teammate at the end of a turn for a successful hit. He also causes "rebounders" in this way for his teammates.
