Pavel Zacha (born April 6, 1997 in Brno ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League since August 2015 .
Career
Youth in the Czech Republic
In his youth, Pavel Zacha played tennis as well as ice hockey , and at the age of ten he was part of the national tennis youth program. On the ice he belonged to the junior team of his home club HC Kometa Brno until the U16 , before he moved to the Bílí Tygři Liberec for the 2010/11 season. In Liberec, Zacha already played in the 2012/13 season - as a 15-year-old - mainly in the U20 and thus the highest junior league in the Czech Republic, scoring 40 points in 39 games . He also made his professional debut in a playoff game on loan for HC Benátky nad Jizerou in the first division . In the international arena, the center forward made his debut at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in 2013 , before he also represented the Czech Republic a little later at the U18 World Cup in 2013 and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in 2013 , where he won the bronze medal with the team.
In the following 2013/14 season, the attacker was also used by the Bílí Tygři Liberec, mainly in the men's area, but in the first-class extra league . There were also 13 U20 appearances and another 12 games on loan for HC Benátky nad Jizerou. Zacha also took part in the U20 and U18 World Cups in 2014 , where he won the silver medal with the U18 in his home country. He was then selected in the KHL Junior Draft 2014 in 82nd position by HK Donbass Donetsk .
Change to North America
At the same time, however, the Sarnia Sting selected him in first position in the CHL Import Draft 2014, so that Zacha decided to switch to the Canadian Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the 2014/15 season . For the Sting, he completed 37 games in his first season, in which he scored 34 points and was subsequently elected to the OHL's First All- Rookie Team . He also represented his home country again at the U20 and U18 World Cups in 2015 , placing sixth in each of the Czech selections. After the season, the New Jersey Devils selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2015 in sixth position, making him the highest drafted Czech in twelve years ( Milan Michálek , also position 6). The Devils equipped Zacha with an entry-level contract in August 2016 , but left him for another season in the OHL, in which he was the Sting's top scorer with 64 points and again took part in the U20 World Cup. After the end of the OHL season, Zacha made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL), in which he made two assists, and came on another eight appearances with the Albany Devils , the farm team of the New Jersey Devils from the American Hockey League ( AHL).
At the start of the 2016/17 season, the attacker established himself in the NHL line-up of the Devils and is now regularly used there. In September 2019, he signed a new three-year contract in New Jersey that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 2.25 million.
