Mackenzie Blackwood (born December 9, 1996 in Thunder Bay , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper . He has been under contract with the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL) since December 2015 and also works for their farm team , the Binghamton Devils , in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Career
Mackenzie Blackwood grew up in Thunder Bay in Northern Ontario and did not start playing ice hockey until he was nine years old. He has played in the position of goalkeeper since he was twelve. About the youth clubs Volunteer Pool Bearcats and Neebing Hawks he came in 2011 to the Thunder Bay Kings , with whom he competed in the Thunder Bay Junior Hockey League . In the Priority Draft of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the highest regional junior league, Blackwood was selected by the Barrie Colts in 2012 . The goalkeeper then played for another year with the Elmira Sugar Kings in the Greater Ontario Hockey League .
In the 2013/14 season Blackwood made his debut for the Barrie Colts, at the end of the season he was selected due to his good performance in the OHL First All-Rookie Team . In the same year he was selected into the OHL All-Stars Team for participation in the Subway Super Series . In 2015 the goalkeeper was able to take part in the CHL Top Prospects Game , but he was canceled for health reasons. In the 2015 NHL Entry Draft , Mackenzie Blackwood was selected in the second round in 42nd position by the New Jersey Devils , with whom he signed a three-year entry contract on December 30, 2015 . The OHL season 2015/16 was statistically Blackwoods best game time, its catch quota was 91.4% with a Gegentorschnitt of 2.72. After the season, the goalkeeper was elected to the OHL First All-Star Team , and he was also named OHL Goaltender of the Year .
From 2016 Blackwood came to the Albany Devils , the New Jersey Devils farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL). The following year the team was relocated to Binghamton , where it has since been known as Binghamton Devils . In the 2017/18 season Blackwood played 32 games for the Devils and conceded an average of 3.41, the worst average of his career to date. At the same time, he was also used for the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL from January 1, 2018 , in the playoff games for the Kelly Cup , the team made it to the conference finals , where they were eliminated against the Florida Everblades . The season 2018/19 Mackenzie Blackwood initially began in Binghamton Devils. He was named to the New Jersey Devils squad on December 17, 2018 , and made his NHL debut the following day in the loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs when he replaced Keith Kinkaid in the third quarter and blocked eight out of ten shots . On December 20, 2018, Blackwood played his first game in the NHL from the start against the Columbus Blue Jackets , where he was again able to fend off 36 of 38 shots. In early 2019 Blackwood took part in the AHL All-Star Classic .
International
In 2016 Mackenzie Blackwood took part with the Canadian U20 national ice hockey team in the U20 Junior World Championship 2016 , where the team was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the team from Finland and finished sixth. The goalkeeper made his debut for the senior national team at the 2019 World Cup in Slovakia , where he won the silver medal with the team.
