Keith Kinkaid (born July 4, 1989 in Farmingville , New York ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and on loan with the Charlotte Checkers in the American since February 2020 Hockey League is used.

Career

Youth and college

Keith Kinkaid was born in Farmingville, Long Island and played for the Suffolk PAL Juniors and the New York Bobcats in his youth . For the 2007/08 season he moved to the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest junior league in the United States, and played 15 games for the Des Moines Buccaneers. With the beginning of the following season 2008/09 Kinkaid went a step "down" in the second highest junior division, the North American Hockey League (NAHL), and was there for the St. Louis Bandits. With the Bandits, the goalkeeper achieved a catch rate of 93.5% and an average of 1.78 goals against in 40 games, which made him the MVP , the best goalkeeper and the First All-Star Team of the NAHL. In the subsequent playoffs, he increased his statistics (95.1% / 1.15 GTS) and thus played a major role in the fact that the Bandits won the Robertson Cup ; Kinkaid himself was also named MVP of the playoffs. In an NHL Entry Draft , however, the goalkeeper was not considered, among other things because the NAHL, as the second junior league in the USA, does not attract any special attention.

After the successful NAHL season, Kinkaid moved to Union College in 2009 and was henceforth active for the Union Dutchmen in the ECAC . In his rookie season, the American had a catch rate of 91.2%, was elected to the All-Rookie Team and the Third All-Star Team of the ECAC and reached the final of the ECAC Playoffs with the Dutchmen, where the team however, Cornell University was defeated. In the following season 2010/11 Kinkaid came to 25 wins in 38 games, was named goalkeeper of the year of the ECAC and elected to the First All-Star team . With these successes he drew sufficient attention from the National Hockey League (NHL), so that he - even without having been selected in the NHL Entry Draft - was signed by the New Jersey Devils in April 2011 .

New Jersey and Columbus

As expected, Kinkaid was given to the New Jersey Devils farm team , the Albany Devils , for the 2011/12 season and thus played in the American Hockey League (AHL). In his first season in the professional field, he had 90.4% saved shots, an average goal against 2.94 and three shutouts . The goalkeeper produced a similar statistic in the following season 2012/13, where he made his debut in the NHL in April 2013 when Martin Brodeur was injured and he was the nominally second goalkeeper Johan Hedberg for the remaining 26 in the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning Minutes replaced.

In the 2013/14 season Kinkaid remained again as the third goalkeeper (behind Brodeur and Cory Schneider ) in the AHL and came there to 24 wins in 43 games for the Albany Devils. He also reached the playoffs for the Calder Cup with the team , but failed there in the first round. Since the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Kinkaid has been firmly established in the NHL squad, as Brodeur moved to the St. Louis Blues and Kinkaid is now the second goalkeeper behind Cory Schneider. In total, he completed 19 NHL missions in the season, in which he came to six wins and a catch rate of 91.5%. In the course of the following years he gradually received more Ice Age in New Jersey and ultimately established himself as a regular in New Jersey's Gate. In February 2019, he was transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a five-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2022 , for which he was not used until the end of the season. He then moved to the Canadiens de Montréal as a free agent , where he signed a one-year contract. This awarded him to the Charlotte Checkers in February 2020, after he had previously been mostly on the ice in the AHL at the Rocket de Laval .

International

At the 2016 World Cup , he represented his home country for the first time on an international level and achieved fourth place with the team. Two years later, the bronze medal at the 2018 World Cup followed .
