The 2013/14 season is the 78th season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, the league's 30 teams play 76 games each. The eight best teams from the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference then play in a play-off round for the Calder Cup .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Houston Eros of Houston , Texas have been relocated to Des Moines , Iowa and now operate under the name Iowa Wild .
- The Peoria Rivermen from Peoria , Illinois were relocated to Utica , New York and now take part in gaming operations under the name Utica Comets . At the Comets, the collaboration with the NHL also changed, as the team now cooperates with the Vancouver Canucks . The previous partner of the Canucks, the Chicago Wolves , came together accordingly with the St. Louis Blues , who previously cooperated with the Rivermen.
- Connecticut Whale also changed its name back to Hartford Wolf Pack .
mode
The 30 teams are divided into two conferences, each with three divisions, and each play 76 games. During the regular season, if there is a tie after three thirds, the winner is determined with a one-time 5-minute overtime followed by a shootout . Eight teams from both conferences qualify for the playoffs, made up of the respective division winners and the other punk bests.

Calder Cup playoffs
mode
In the first three rounds, each conference plays its own winner, who meet in the Calder Cup final. The team that is highest on the seeding list always meets the lowest seeded team. Within each conference, the division winners take the first three places, while the remaining teams are sorted in descending order according to their number of points. The first play-off round is played in best-of-five mode , all other series are played in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher ranked team has the first two games at home, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
For games that remain tied after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows , which, in contrast to the regular season, is played with five field players. The thirds continue to last 20 minutes and play continues until one team scores the next goal (continuous overtime).
