Joni Ortio (born April 16, 1991 in Turku ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with Barys Nur-Sultan from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since May 2020 .
Career
Ortio began his career in the youth department of the TPS Turku , for which he was in the highest Finnish league in his age group until 2007. He then moved to city rivals TuTo for a year before returning to TPS and leading the U20 team in the 2009 play-offs to the final of the Finnish championship.
In the 2009 NHL Entry Draft , Ortio was selected in the sixth round at a total of 171st position by the Calgary Flames . In the 2009/10 season he finally made his professional debut for the men's team of TPS in the SM-liiga and was used at the same time for TuTo, the club's cooperation partner in the second-class Mestis . In the following season he stood as a substitute goalkeeper behind Atte Engren for the first time regularly in the squad of TPS and completed 15 games in the SM-liiga. Finally he won the Finnish championship title with his team .
After the end of the season, Ortio signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames on March 30, 2011 and initially switched to the Flames' farm team, the Abbotsford Heat , in the American Hockey League on a trial basis . On his debut against the Toronto Marlies , he conceded six goals. In the following season he was initially in the squad of the Heat and completed nine missions there before returning to his home club TPS in the SM-liiga in January 2012. For the 2012/13 season Ortio moved within the SM-liiga to Helsingfors IFK , where he was the most frequently used goalkeeper in the league with 54 games.
Before the 2013/14 season he moved to North America again, but initially did not get a place in the Heat squad. Instead, he was sent to the Alaska Aces , the Heat's farm team, in the ECHL in October 2013 , where he was used for four games. Then he was able to prevail as a goalkeeper in Abbotsford and recorded a catch rate of 92.6 percent in 37 games. At the end of the season he was appointed to the AHL All-Rookie Team for his services . On February 27, 2014 Ortio also made his debut for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League in the game against the Los Angeles Kings and came there to a total of nine missions.
After Ortio regularly switched between the NHL and AHL in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2016. As a result, the goalkeeper signed a one-year contract with Skellefteå AIK from Svenska Hockeyligan in September 2016 . With the SAIK he reached the Swedish runner-up in the 2017/18 season and performed very well. In May 2018 he moved from the SHL to the KHL for HK Witjas .
After a year in the KHL, he did not receive a new contract from HK Witjas and was signed by the ZSC Lions from the Swiss National League in October 2019 . At the end of the season, however, the Finn left the club and switched back to the KHL, where he joined the Kazakh club Barys Nur-Sultan .
International
Joni Ortio represented Finland for the first time at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2008 and, as a regular goalkeeper, helped the team to win the bronze medal at the U18 Junior World Championship the following year . At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2010 and 2011 , he was also in the goal of the Finnish selection and finished the tournament in 2011 with a catch rate of 93.1 percent as the second best goalkeeper behind Jack Campbell .
After he had already represented the Finnish men's national team on the Euro Hockey Tour , Ortio was in the squad for the first time at the 2013 World Cup and played three appearances as a substitute goalkeeper behind Antti Raanta . He was also in the Finnish squad at the 2017 World Cup , but was not used there.
