Darren Dietz (born July 17, 1993 in Medicine Hat , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with Kazakh nationality who has been under contract with Barys Nur-Sultan from the Continental Hockey League since July 2017 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Dietz began his junior career during the 2009/10 season with the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League . Ultimately, he played there until the summer of 2013, during which time he took part in the prestigious Memorial Cup once with the team . After the defender was the most dangerous player in his position in the 2012/13 season , he was appointed to the First All-Star Team of the Eastern Conference. Already in the NHL Entry Draft 2011 Dietz was selected in the fifth round in 138th place by the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League .
In March 2013, the defender was finally signed by the Canadiens, who used him in their farm teams in the American Hockey League at the beginning of the 2013/14 season . Initially, the Canadian played exclusively for the Hamilton Bulldogs for two years , then in the third year he was part of the team of the new cooperation partner St. John's IceCaps . In the course of the 2015/16 season , the then 22-year-old finally made his debut in the NHL with the Habs . There he came to a total of 13 missions. Nevertheless, his contract was not extended in the summer of 2016, after which Dietz accepted a contract offer from Washington Capitals for a year as a free agent in July 2016 . There he also failed to make his breakthrough in the NHL and he spent the entire game year in the AHL. The defensive player was initially used by the Hershey Bears until the beginning of March 2017 and then on loan from league rivals Texas Stars until the end of the season .
Due to the lack of offers from North America in summer 2017, Dietz decided to move abroad. He signed a one-year contract with the Kazakh capital club Barys Astana from the Continental Hockey League . After a successful 2017/18 season , his contract was extended for another two years in April 2018. In the 2018/19 season , the Canadian, who acquired his Kazakh citizenship while working for Barys, was the KHL's defender with the highest points and most dangerous goals.
International
After his naturalization, Dietz played for the first time at the World Cup 2019 of Division IA for the national team of Kazakhstan at an international tournament. With the team, he was promoted to the top division. He himself was voted the tournament's best defender and was appointed to the All-Star Team. In five tournament games he scored five points scorer .
For his native Canada, Dietz had not come to the national team in either the junior or senior division.
