Henrik Karlsson (born November 27, 1983 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper with Kazakh citizenship who has been under contract with Barys Astana / Nur-Sultan in the Continental Hockey League since May 2016 . His brother Rickard was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Henrik Karlsson started his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Hammarby Hockey , where he was active until 2002. The goalkeeper then played for two years for the third division club Botkyrka HC , as well as the IK Oskarshamn from the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , for which he made his professional ice hockey debut. From 2006 to 2008 he was again for his hometown club Hammarby Hockey between the posts, this time in the HockeyAllsvenskan, but he ended the 2007/08 season at its league rivals Malmö Redhawks , where he also began the 2008/09 season before he joined them Södertälje SK finished in the Elitserien .
On August 12, 2009 Karlsson signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League , but was loaned to the Färjestad BK from the Elitserien a day later for the entire 2009/10 season. There he was able to convince with a goal average of 2.45 per game and a catch rate of 91.4%. In exchange for a six-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft , the Swede was transferred from San Jose to the Calgary Flames in June 2010 . For the Canadians, he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 2010/11 season . In Calgary he was the substitute goalkeeper behind Miikka Kiprusoff from Finland . In January 2013, the Flames transferred him to the Chicago Blackhawks , for which he did not, however, complete a game. Before the 2013/14 season he was committed by Skellefteå AIK from the Svenska Hockeyligan , but in January 2014 handed over to the HK Awangard Omsk from the Continental Hockey League . For Awangard he completed ten KHL games by the end of the season and also won the Nadezhda Cup with the club .
In May 2014 he was hired by KHL newcomer Jokerit Helsinki . After two years in Helsinki, he moved to another KHL club, Barys Astana / Nur-Sultan from Kazakhstan, in May 2016 .
International
In December 2017, Karlsson announced that he wanted to apply for Kazakh citizenship in order to represent Kazakhstan internationally. In April 2018 he received his Kazakh citizenship and was then immediately eligible to play for the Kazakh national team, as he had never represented Sweden in an IIHF tournament, but only in friendly matches and other tournaments such as the Euro Hockey Tour .
He made his World Cup debut for Kazakhstan at the 2018 World Cup , when he achieved the best catch quota in Division I.
