The Svenska Hockeyligan ( Elitserien i ishockey between 1975 and 2013 ) is the top division for Swedish ice hockey clubs . The winner of the play-offs is Swedish champions. The former name Elitserien has also been used for other sports, but the ice hockey championship is considered the best known. However, in order to give itself a clear identity, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation, Svenska Ishockeyförbundet , decided in June 2013 to rename the league to Svenska Hockeyligan .

The Svenska Hockeyligan consists of 14 teams, which play a double round with 52 games per club. The best six teams qualify directly for the play-off quarter-finals, the teams in positions 7 to 10 play out two further play-off participants in best-of-three series. The other play-off series will be played entirely in the " best-of-seven " mode . The winner of the play-offs will be awarded the Le Mat Cup . The 13th of the SHL plays against the 2nd of the Allsvenskan and the 14th against the 1st directly in the best-of-seven mode for promotion to or to remain in the SHL.

For a game in the preliminary round (“basic series”) the winner receives 3 points after 60 minutes. If the game is tied after 60 minutes, the game is extended by 5 minutes with 4 against 4. If there is still no winner, the winner is decided in a penalty shootout. For a win after extra time or penalty shootout, the winner receives 2 points, the loser 1 point.

history

From 1922 to the founding of the Elitserien in 1975 there were different competitions in which the Swedish championship title was played out. In 1975 a professional league was introduced for the first time with the "Elitserien". The Elitserien has been subject to constant changes over the years. Until the early 1990s, ten teams competed, which after 36 preliminary round games played the master in the semi-finals and finals in the best-of-three mode. In the 1990s, the league was expanded to include twelve teams, which determined the placements for the play-offs and the participants in the relegation round in initially 40 (later 50) preliminary round games. Then the teams played the Swedish champions in places 1 to 8 (best-of-five mode). At the beginning of the 2000s, the number of preliminary round games was increased to 55, the play-offs were now played in the best-of-seven mode. The last change was made for the 2015/16 season. Since then, 14 teams have been playing in 52 preliminary round matches for the placements for the play-offs and the relegation round (see above). Until 2015/16, the last two teams of the Elitserien played against the four best teams of the Allsvenskan in a double round ( Kvalserien ) for two places in the following season of the Elitserien / SHL. Since 2015/16, the 13th of the SHL has been playing against the 2nd of the Allsvenskan and the 14th against the 1st directly in the best-of-seven mode for promotion to or remain in the SHL.
