The First League ( MOL League until 2017 ) is a Southeast European ice hockey competition founded in 2008 for teams from Hungary and Romania . In the past there were also individual participants from Slovakia , Serbia and Austria . The former name of the league came from the main sponsor of the competition at the time, the Hungarian mineral oil and gas company MOL . Since 2017 until at least 2020 bears the league after the new main sponsor Erste Bank the name First League .

history

The MOL League emerged from the highest Hungarian league, the Borsodi Jégkorong League . Before the 2007/08 season, two clubs from Transylvania , Romania , were included in this league: HC Csíkszereda and SC Miercurea Ciuc . At the same time, the Hungarian series champion Alba Volán Székesfehérvár left the Hungarian league and joined the Austrian Ice Hockey League (EBEL).

A year later there was a further increase in the number of participants when three new teams were added to the league: the capital club Budapest Stars , the Romanian record champions Steaua Bucharest and their compatriots from CS Progym Gheorgheni . Together with the two teams from Miercurea-Ciuc, the number of Romanian teams grew to four and thus almost half of the total of ten teams. Therefore, the league was separated from the national Hungarian championship, which will continue to be played in parallel and only Hungarian teams take part. The purely Hungarian games of the MOL league represent the regular season of the Hungarian league.

From 2012 to 2015, the Ice Tigers Nové Zámky , a Slovak club that also took part in the championship, won the league in 2014. In 2016/17 HK Belgrade took part in the league, whose squad largely corresponded to the Serbian national team .

In 2017, the Austrian Erste Bank took over the main sponsorship of the league, the name was changed to Erste Liga . At that time the first bank was also the title sponsor of the Austrian Ice Hockey League ( Erste Bank Ice Hockey League ). From 2017 to 2019 the Austrian club Vienna Capitals also provided a farm team in the league.

In 2018, MAC Budapest and DVTK Jegesmedvék, two of the best Hungarian teams in the league, moved to the Slovak extra league .

All Romanian teams take part in the Romanian ice hockey league at the same time as the MOL league .
