Slovenian ice hockey league

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Slovenian Ice Hockey League is the highest division in Slovenian ice hockey , in which the Slovenian champions are also played. It was founded in 1991 after Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia . After teams from Croatia had already participated in the league for the first time in the 2006/07 season , a second championship was started in 2009 with the Slohokej League , which - similar to the Alpine League and the Interleague a few years earlier - played its own master before then the respective national champions are determined. As a result, the Slovenian Ice Hockey League has only been played in a shortened form since then.

So far only two teams have been able to achieve the title of Slovenian champions . HDD Olimpija Ljubljana is the record holder with a total of 13 titles, followed by HK Jesenice with eight titles.

history

The Slovenian ice hockey league emerged in 1991 after the breakup of Yugoslavia from the former Yugoslav ice hockey league. In the years of its existence, the championship has been consistently dominated by the two teams HK Jesenice and HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , who are still the only holders of the Slovenian championship title . The history of the league is shaped by the parallel international ice hockey competitions of the Alpine League (1991 to 1999) and the Interliga (1999 to 2007). This often resulted in a shortened season with only a few games.

Due to the clear class difference, HK Jesenice was looking for a solution early on that could present the team with a new challenge. Since the 2006/07 season , HK Jesenice has been participating in the Austrian ice hockey league . The HDD Olimpija Ljubljana followed a year later. However, both teams continue to operate farm teams in the Slovenian league and join the playoffs with the first team when the Slovenian champions are played out.

Conversely, the league also took on a foreign team in the 2006/07 season with KHL Medveščak Zagreb from Croatia . As the number of participants from other nations increased, the Slohokej League was launched in 2009, with teams from four nations participating. The Slohokej League was discontinued in 2012 after disputes with the operating company and the remaining Slovenian teams joined the Inter-National League (INL). At the end of the season, the Slovenian clubs of the EBEL, the INL and the Slovenian Ice Hockey League play the Slovenian champions.

The league was reorganized for the 2017/18 season and is now called the International Hockey League (IHL). Among other things, the participating clubs have to pay a registration fee. The model is the Alps Hockey League (AlpsHL), in which Slovenian clubs also participate. The five Slovenian IHL clubs and the two Slovenian participants in the AlpsHL play the Slovenian state championship (Državno prvenstvo). The games of the Slovenian teams in the IHL count internally for the championship.
