The 1996/97 season was the sixth staging of the Slovenian ice hockey league after Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia . It was held with eight teams. The defending champion and new champion was HDD Olimpija Ljubljana .

Participant field and mode

The field of participants grew again from six to eight teams compared to the previous year. The HK Celje returned to the financially-related off during the 1994-95 season in the top flight back. A new addition was the HK Kranjska Gora .

The basic round was held in two groups. The HK Jesenice , the HK Bled and the reigning champion HDD Olimpija Ljubljana took before hosting the Slovenian League at the Alpenliga part (see Alpenliga 1996/97 ). The points achieved there in the regular season (Ljubljana with 48, Jesenice with 34 and Bled with 27) were taken over for the table of the Slovenian league. Following the Alpine League, the three teams completed a round-trip round against the other five teams, with the points scored being added to those taken over from the Alpine League.

The remaining five teams completed three and a half rounds back and forth in parallel to the Alpine League in order to play off the fourth participant for the final round. In the final round a double round trip was played. Then the playoffs followed.
