The 1995/96 season was the fifth edition of the Slovenian ice hockey league after Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia . It was played with six teams. The defending champion and new champion was HDD Olimpija Ljubljana .

Participant field and mode

The field of participants shrank to six teams compared to the previous year, as HK Celje had to stop playing for financial reasons during the current last season. The mode remained, unlike last year, however, there was again a discharge of Alpenliga before the start of the national championships. In the Slovenian league, a double round trip was played in the regular season. The four best-placed teams then played another simple round-trip round for the final placement before the playoffs. These were the semifinals and finals in the mode Best of Seven held. The other placements were also played out.

Basic round

After HDD Ljubljana had won the basic round for the first time last year, the team managed a perfect season in the 1995/96 season in which all twenty matches were completed and won without losing points. HK Jesenice established itself as the first pursuer, but at no time was a threat to the league leaders. The HK Slavija achieved a very special first: for the first time the team did not finish the basic round in last place, but instead secured the penultimate place with the first three preliminary round victories since the Slovenian league was held.
