The HK Celje (Hokejski club Celje) is an ice hockey team from Celje , Slovenia .

history

The first ice hockey team existed in Celje as early as 1947, and games were played depending on the weather. That changed in 1966 when Celje got its own ice rink. The HK Celje subsequently played mostly in the lower leagues of Yugoslavia, but made it to the Yugoslav ice hockey league for the first time in 1973 .

With the independence of Slovenia, HK Celje took part in the Slovenian ice hockey league and was one of the direct competitors of Olimpija Ljubljana and HK Jesenice . Between 1993 and 1995 the club was trained by the Russian Vladimir Krikunow . The HK Celje achieved the best placement in the club's history in 1994 , when the team finished the preliminary round first and the intermediate round second. In the 1994/95 season, instead of the Alpine League, a European League Cup was held in which HK Celje reached the semi-finals and was eliminated in this without a win.

During the 1994/95 season , the club had to withdraw from the game operations due to financial problems and was inactive for the following two years. In 1997 the club was revived and immediately started playing in the Slovenian league again. In 2000, the club faced financing problems again, so that the men's team was dissolved again and the club concentrated again on the youth work.

In the 2009/10 season , the club's women's team took part in the Austrian women's ice hockey league and took second place.

Between 2013 and 2016, the club took part in the transnational Inter-National League .
