The 2008/09 season of the Slovenian ice hockey league was played with a total of ten teams, which were joined in the playoffs by the two Slovenian participants in the Austrian Erste Bank ice hockey league . For the first time, two Croatian teams took part in the championship: the KHL Medveščak Zagreb and the KHL Mladost Zagreb . The Slovenian champion was HK Jesenice , who defended his title in the final against HDD Olimpija Ljubljana .

Playoffs
The teams in places one to eight were qualified for the playoffs. In the eighth and quarter finals, the opponents for the two teams participating in the EBEL were determined, which were added in the semifinals. These two prevailed against the semi-finals of the Slovenian league and determined the Slovenian champions among themselves. With a clear 4-0 in the final series, this became HK Jesenice.
