Erste Bank Ice Hockey League

After HDD Olimpija Ljubljana's move to Erste Bank Eishockey Liga was confirmed in 2007, a new team was built around long-time regulars. Some foreign players who had already gained extensive experience in the Austrian league were signed. The most important transfer, however, took place in the position of goalkeeper, where Alex Westlund replaced long-time Ljubljana goalkeeper Klemen Mohorič . The team started the season well and was able to defeat some of the favorites by mid-October, but this run did not last long. A series of defeats followed, in the course of which the team slipped back to the bottom of the table. Although the performance stabilized, it was no longer possible to make up the gap to the six best teams, which had grown quite large. In the qualifying round, where the last four teams played the remaining two playoff places, the team did not lose any of the games in regular time and only had to admit defeat once in the penalty shootout.

In the playoffs they met EC KAC in the quarterfinals and created a small sensation in the first game by defeating the favorite 3-1 on foreign ice. In the end, the team made it to the semi-finals with a sweep , where EHC Linz was also beaten 4-2. Completely unexpectedly, the team made it to the final, where the defending champion EC Red Bull Salzburg was waiting. Here, too, the winning streak initially seemed to continue when Laibach won the first game in Salzburg 3-2 after a penalty shoot-out. Although Salzburg initially regained their home advantage, Laibach managed to win again after extra time on Salzburg ice. However, there were some harder scenes. The criminal senate suspended a Slovenian player, which meant that HDD Olimpija Ljubljana had fewer player points available for the next game. However, the Laibacher made a mistake in setting up the following game and deployed too many players. The match was then penalized 5-0 in favor of Salzburg. The Ljubljana only found out about this when they were already on their way to Salzburg for the fifth final game. This rather late decision hit the team very hard and game number five was also lost. To make matters worse, Alex Westlund was injured so that the final was lost in the sixth game on his own ice.

For the 2008/09 season , the team's trunk was left almost unchanged. Alex Westlund, however, moved to EHC Linz and had to be replaced by Mike Morrison . However, the first game already showed that there were problems in the team when Salzburg won 7-0 on Laibacher Eis. The team's performance did not stabilize in the period that followed. Mike Morrison was replaced during the season by Markus Korhonen , who brought no improvement either. So the season had to end in last place.

In the 2009/10 season , the club management succeeded in signing well-known players, which initially gave hope for a successful season. After the team had started the season with only very moderate success, there were big budget problems at the halfway point of the season. Olimpija had to release most of the transfer card players prematurely and bring the season to an end with a core team, which consisted largely of young players. Despite a few isolated successes, the team slipped to last place by the end of the preliminary round.

In the following situations this process was repeated several times, with problems becoming known around Christmas time and the team ending up in last place. In the summer breaks there were also reports of an exit or the end of the club and a steadily decreasing average attendance since the 2013/14 season . In addition, there were repeated reports of outstanding salary payments.

In 2017 the club left the league due to financial problems, but initially retained a dormant membership . The youth club HK Olimpija will play in the Alps Hockey League as the successor to the HDD from 2017 .
