Frank Banham (born April 14, 1975 in Calahoo , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player with Hungarian citizenship who has played in the Austrian ice hockey league at EC Red Bull Salzburg , HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , KHL Medveščak Zagreb and Alba Volán Székesfehérvár . He has also been eligible to play for the Hungarian national team since April 2015 .
Career
Frank Banham began his career as a hockey player with the Saskatoon Blades , for which he was active from 1992 to 1996 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1993 in the sixth round as a total of 147 players by the Washington Capitals , for which he however never played. Instead, he signed on January 27, 1996 as a free agent a contract with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , after he had previously ended the 1995/96 season with their farm team , the Baltimore Bandits from the American Hockey League . In the 1996/97 season the attacker made his debut in the National Hockey League for Anaheim, but was used almost exclusively for their new AHL farm team, the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , in the four years in the California franchise .
In the summer of 2000 Banham went to Europe for the first time, where he received a contract with the Espoo Blues from the Finnish SM-liiga . He left this after only one year to play for their league rival Jokerit Helsinki for a season . With the capital city, the right-handed shooter won the Finnish championship straight away in the 2001/02 season . After he started the 2002/03 season again at Jokerit, he was signed on November 7, 2002 as a free agent by the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL. For this he completed in the following year and a half, however, only five games and spent the rest of the time with their AHL farm team Springfield Falcons . Therefore, the winger first finished the 2003/04 season at HK Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League , before he completed the following season at SaiPa Lappeenranta in Finland.
The 2005/06 season began Banham at Friborg-Gottéron in the Swiss National League A . However, he left the Confederates after only six games and signed with EC Red Bull Salzburg from the Austrian ice hockey league . With the Salzburg team he won the championship for the first time in the 2006/07 season . In the following season, in which Red Bull again became champions, the Canadian joined the Malmö Redhawks from HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division, shortly before the end of the season . 2008/09 changed Banham after the end of the season with HDD Olimpija Ljubljana for the remainder of the season to the EHC Biel in the National League A . He returned to Ljubljana for the 2009/10 season before moving to KHL Medveščak Zagreb in 2010 . In 2012 he moved to Hungary, where he was on the ice for Alba Volán Székesfehérvár in the Austrian ice hockey league until 2016 . In February 2016, he ended his club career after 526 EBEL games.
International
As part of the Spengler Cup 2000 , Banham played five times for Team Canada and contributed four goals to the victory of his team. As the only player on his team, he was appointed to the all-star team of the tournament. In April 2015, Banham received Hungarian citizenship and made his debut at the World Cup of the same year for the Hungarian national team , with which he was promoted to the top division by a second place in the A group of Division I. As the best goal preparer (together with his compatriot Andrew Sarauer and the Kazakh Talgat Schailauow ), he himself contributed significantly to the success. At the 2016 World Cup , he scored the Hungarians' only goal in the opening game, which was lost 4-1 to Slovakia .
