The Hungarian national ice hockey team occupies 20th place in the IIHF world rankings and currently plays in Division I at world championships (as of the 2018 World Championship). So far, the team has participated in the Olympic Games three times , most recently at the 1964 Games in Innsbruck .
The national team is organized by the national ice hockey association Magyar Jégkorong Szövetség . There is no NHL player in the current squad, but with Tamás Gröschl ( Edmonton Oilers ), Levente Szuper ( Calgary Flames ) and János Vas ( Dallas Stars ) three players have been drafted in North America .
While the promotion to the top division was narrowly missed in 2007 , the 4-2 win against Ukraine on April 19, 2008, after 70 years, enabled them to return to the strongest group in the World Cup. At the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland, the Hungarian team relegated to Division I.
In 2015 , Hungary rose again to the top division as the second-placed team behind Kazakhstan .
In preparation for the annual world championships, the national team regularly takes part in tournaments of the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge .
