history

After Portugal joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1999 , efforts were made to found a national ice hockey team as well as a national inline hockey team . For this reason, the Federação Portuguesa de Desportos no Gelo organized a tournament in June 2000 in cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in Portugal, during which the Portuguese national team - mainly consisting of inline hockey players and Portuguese emigrated to Canada - their first three test matches against one Selection of Canada, which was composed of members of the First Portuguese Canadian Cultural Center from Toronto - contested.

Subsequently, the national team played only a few more games, although there are always efforts to reactivate the national team more strongly, as there is a very large Portuguese community in the USA, but especially in Canada, the motherland of ice hockey . The rare games include the two friendlies in Elvas , southern Portugal , in which the Portuguese defeated a reserve team from the Czech national ice hockey team 6: 4 and 6: 2 in January 2015 .

In 2017 Portugal competed in the newly founded Development Cup and finished third out of four teams. In the second edition of the tournament, Portugal lost to Macedonia in the final .
