The following year Malaysia took part in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia for the first time when they achieved their greatest success to date with second place behind the Republic of China . A year later, Malaysia qualified for the semi-finals, in which the national selection lost 3-1 to the eventual winner from the United Arab Emirates . The subsequent game for third place was decided by Malaysia with a 4: 3 against Thailand .

The 2017 Southeast Asian Games took place in Malaysia and included an ice hockey competition for the first time . To this end, the first ice rink in Malaysia that complies with IIHF rules was built, the 600-seat Malaysia National Ice Skating Stadium near the capital Kuala Lumpur .
