The 29th Southeast Asian Games were held for the sixth time in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia , after 1965 , 1971 , 1977 , 1989 and 2001 . From August 19 to 30, 2017, 4,646 athletes from eleven countries competed against each other. The most successful nation was host Malaysia, which won more than twice as many gold medals as Thailand, which was second in the medal table .
