Karin Saarsen

Karin Saarsen (real name since 1959 Karlstedt , born December 31, 1926 in Tartu ; † January 25, 2018 in Stockholm ) was an Estonian writer and journalist .

Life

Saarsen's father was an Estonian officer (colonel), her mother Polish. She spent her childhood in Elva and Riga , where her father was stationed as a military attaché from 1934 to 1938 . In 1940 the family moved to Germany, where they went to school in Berlin for a few years before returning to Germany-occupied Estonia in 1942. It was here that Saarsen graduated from the Jakob Westholm School in Tallinn in 1944 , before finally leaving Estonia in the same year.

After that, Saarsen initially lived in a refugee camp in Germany. In 1947 she went to England, where she studied journalism in London . Since 1949 she lived in Sweden, where she studied at Stockholm University from 1960 to 1963 and obtained an MA in 1970. She worked in various newspaper offices and later worked as a freelance journalist and writer.

Saarsen's first poem was published in Estonia during World War II, but her first volume of poetry was not published until 1961 in exile in Sweden. In her poetry, love is the “all-dominating theme”, with the critics stating that the greater part of her love poetry is “courageous, defiant, devoid of conventions and defiantly sensual like the young Marie Under, ” who is seen as her role model can.

Saarsen achieved greater recognition with her narrow prose work, in which eroticism and politics are skillfully combined.
