Life

Rhinow learned to play the piano himself in his childhood and tried his hand at arrangements and his own compositions for the first time at the age of nine. His father, although concert master himself , wanted his son to learn a "proper" profession. After Rhinow the High School was he was in World War II for military service confiscated. In 1943, at the age of 21 , he was taken prisoner by the Anglo-Americans and passed through “half of Europe and Africa , through Great Britain and the United States ”. During this time, Rhinow was able to train himself in composition and arrangement and made the decision to study composition after his return home. This is exactly what happened in 1947, when Rhinow returned at the age of 26 and began studying music with a major in composition at the Berlin University of Music . He also improved his piano, saxophone and accordion skills . He received his first orders for arrangements in 1957, followed by others from various radio stations, such as SFB , WDR , NDR , SWF and BR , for their respective orchestras . He also wrote for the bands of Max Greger , Ambros Seelos as well as for René Kollo , Caterina Valente and Roberto Blanco .

In 1968, Rhinow was commissioned by WDR to write arrangements for the Berlin Police Orchestra. The originally rather accidental contact with brass music soon developed into a long-term collaboration with Herbert Domagalla , the director of the police orchestra . By winning the first prize in the composition competition for modern brass music organized by the WDR together with the Bundeswehr in 1971 and 1973, the military music service also became aware of Hans-Joachim Rhinow and he composed and arranged for all music corps of the Bundeswehr. The winning pieces in the competition were the airport overtures and avocados .

Rhinow died on March 8, 2017 at the age of 95 in his hometown of Berlin.
