Jaan Undusk (born November 14, 1958 in Otepää ) is an Estonian writer , literary scholar and translator .

Life

Jaan Undusk went to school in Tallinn and studied Estonian Philology at the University of Tartu from 1977 to 1982 . From 1983 to 1986 he was a doctoral candidate at the Tallinn Institute for Language and Literature of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and received his doctorate in 1986 with a thesis on Friedebert Tuglas as a candidate for philology . He then worked as a scientist at the same institute and in 2000 was appointed director of the Under and Tuglas Literature Center , as the research facility is now called after various renaming and restructuring.

Undusk is now one of Estonia's leading literary scholars and intellectuals. His research focus is on German Baltic literature and cultural history, the Estonian intellectual history in general and the international interdependencies of Estonian culture. He has made special studies on the language of the Stalinist era and on various aspects of Estonian exile literature.

In addition, Jaan Undusk has appeared as a writer. His novel Kuum ("Hot"), published in 1990, is considered one of the "milestones in prose renewal" at the end of the 20th century. The novel, characterized by baroque parlance, became a milestone in the intertextuality debate in Estonia. After that, Undusk mainly wrote plays with a cultural and historical content.
